Chiefs rumors: Brandon Marshall doesn’t make sense for Kansas City
By Matt Conner
So how does he fit (or not) on the Kansas City Chiefs? Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much use for Marshall with Andy Reid’s offense. To bring in Brandon Marshall would certainly be a boost to the wide receiving corps, but it also means that someone else is not receiving the football.
Jeremy Maclin was already underused in 2016 and deserves more looks. Tyreek Hill will undoubtedly earn several more targets than he did his rookie season. Chris Conley has all the tools to be a breakout player if the Chiefs would actually air it out a bit more. And then there’s Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce. The Chiefs also feature the halfback in the passing game more than most, whoever that will be next season. Where, in all of this, would Marshall fit? Is it worth further stuffing Conley’s potential in a box? Is it worth another middling statistical season from Maclin?
If there were serious changes planned at the quarterback position, then Marshall would make much more sense, but given the ultra-boost of confidence given to Alex Smith from anyone employed at Arrowhead, the Chiefs aren’t planning any changes for 2017. That means Marshall makes little sense for 2017.
A serious upgrade at running back? Absolutely. A second tight end a la Martellus Bennett? Sure. A wideout like Marshall? Not so much.
