2017 NFL mock draft: Chiefs take Alabama OLB Tim Williams
By Matt Conner
The downside for Williams is that off-the-field concerns linger around the linebacker, especially a drug-related report from Walter Football.
Williams was also arrested on a misdemeanor gun charge, for carrying a handgun with a permit in 2016 and was forced to sit for half of one game.
The Chiefs currently have three pass rushers of note, but all three come with serious ability and concerns. Justin Houston can be one of the NFL’s true elite defenders, but he also has a very hard time staying healthy in recent seasons. Dee Ford took considerable time to develop, came on strong last year and even led the league at the halfway point of the season in sacks, and then failed to make an impact down the stretch. Tamba Hali is a steady veteran who has fallen off, and it remains to be seen what he has left for a full season.
Adding a player like Tim Williams to that mix not only raises the floor and provides the Chiefs a steady pass rush, but if everyone is healthy and fresh, the team could potentially boast the best overall pass rushing unit in the NFL.
