Against Chicago, Ford appeared to improve his run defense and pursuit. Each play that Chicago handed off Ford was hot on the runner’s tail or keeping his outside contain. Two plays did stand out where he (assisted by Chris Jones) made a solid tackle limiting the run to a minimal gain. Judging strictly on this Chicago game the Chiefs may have hope in Ford and his ability to read the run. However, until he proves it against a good offensive line, I am not willing to remove his bust tag.

Against the pass Ford continues to be a one trick pony. He speed rushes outside. If he can’t beat the tackle  to his spot then he allows himself to be moved beyond the pocket. He does not ever let the tackle over extend and fight across to the quarterback. When you watch premiere rushers around the league they read and put in a variety of moves. If in three years Ford has yet to accomplish this then he will not ever be able to achieve his potential.

The biggest threat to Ford right now is Dadi Nicolas. Nicolas is a rookie but he showed great promise even against Chicago’s ones at the start of the second half. His pass rush is more varied and he keeps tackles off his chest to allow him to read the play. Experience will eventually allow him to not only read these plays but get to the ball carrier more quickly.

If only for understanding of the game, Ford will make the team and start in place of Justin Houston in September. Don’t be surprised if Houston misses more than four games that and under-performing Ford will be replaced.
