NFL news: Around the league in 32 plays

1 of 4

The only one-stop place for Chiefs fans to get all the NFL news and rumors from around the league from the point of view of the Kansas City franchise.

It’s Friday, Addicts, and that means it’s time for another weekly round up of all the NFL news and rumors from around the league.  THE DOLDRUMS ARE OVER!!!

Today’s Franchise Tag deadline marks the end of the dead season for NFL news.  While Training Camps don’t start for another week yet, we will get plenty of headlines about holdouts, last minute suspension announcements, and surprise injury announcements.  That’s more than enough to hold us over until camps officially start.

More from Kansas City Chiefs News

As for this week, there was definitely a surge in news thanks largely to the Franchise Tag deadline that has produced seven story lines worth keeping up with.  Normally, that would be what I wanted to lead with.  However, timing of the deadlines throw that off a bit as this is being published before the deals are done.  But that does leave room for a major story that affects our beloved Kansas City Chiefs…

Lead Story: Chiefs Sued Over Death At Arrowhead

The death of a person should never be trivialized.  Losing a loved one to unnatural causes is especially painful for a family because they know it could have been prevented.  However, getting killed because you drunkenly climbed into another drunk person’s car is about as dumb as it gets. Maybe that’s a bit cold and heartless on my account, but I’m simply going to speak my mind on this.  This is the direct fault of two drunken idiots, the victim and the offender.

(Arrowhead Stadium)”fosters an environment in which confrontation, assaults and other related behaviors routinely take place and of which defendant Kansas City Chiefs are aware.” ~ Van Winkle family lawyers

But that’s not how a lawyers for the family of a victim from an incident in 2013 feels.  The law firm of ‘Smith, Graham, Buckley & Carr’ believe that the Chiefs are to blame for the death of Kyle Van Winkle.  Their reasoning?  The beloved Chiefs Kingdom tradition of tailgating.

Nevermind the fact that the offender, Joshua Bradley, has already accepted responsibility for his actions.  No, according to the law firm, this is actually the fault of an environment that “fosters an environment in which confrontation, assaults and other related behaviors routinely take place and of which defendant Kansas City Chiefs are aware.”

Not sure about you folks, but I’ve been to a lot of tailgates and have thus far managed to avoid confrontations, assaults, and other related behaviors…despite my penchant for getting into quite a few of those situations throughout my Marine Corps days.

Is an organization really responsible for the actions of the people in attendance?  The Chiefs are in the entertainment business, and it seems to me that by and large they do a pretty good job of it.

And the tailgating at Arrowhead is rated as some of the best in all professional sports, while very rarely making headlines for anything else.

Could it be that I’ve got this all wrong, and tailgating is a harbinger of malicious action…or did some drunken idiot do something stupid that got him in a fight with another drunken idiot?  Sorry if anyone is offended my speaking ill of the dead…but I’m going to call it what it is.
