Many fans and analysts alike know that as the Chiefs offensive line goes, so usually goes the offense. The past three seasons the line has been just “good enough” for a few division wins and a playoff spot but know real championship threat. That is a much hoped for change this year as some writers and former players believe that this may be the best offensive line the Chiefs field in years.

The greatest issue for the line these past three years lied in its ability to handle pressure. The Chiefs were consistently allowing more sacks than most of the league and not giving their cautious quarterback time to make good decisions downfield. Some may point out that should Alex Smith be given more time, he could shed the poor nickname of “captain checkdown.”

What makes this year’s offensive line different? For one, the Chiefs have found true leadership in center Mitch Morse who can guide the rest of the front in blocking assignments pre-snap. This can help ease the pressure from blitzes. The Chiefs also have possibly one of the best signings of free agency in Mitchell Schwartz who boasts the highest grade at right tackle for 2015 according to pro football focus. The continued progression of projects like Eric Fisher and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif will also give hope to Chiefs fans.
