3. 1971 AFC Divisional – Miami Dolphins at Kansas City Chiefs

Anybody who watched this game probably is turning away from the computer right now, including my father. The Chiefs were a great team in 1971, trying for their second Super Bowl title in three seasons. Kansas City was the odds-on favorite to get to the Super Bowl and faced off against the upstart Miami Dolphins on Christmas Day in the opening round of the AFC playoffs.

The contest would turn into one of the most celebrated in NFL history, with two great teams going back and forth. Of course, this game would also become known for the efforts of Kansas City running back Ed Podolak, who put forth the greatest single-game output the NFL has ever seen.

Podolak went for a playoff-record 350 total yards, including three kick returns that totaled 154 yards. He would also add another 110 receiving and 85 rushing yards in this thriller, which ultimately went to double overtime and became the longest game ever played.

After Jan Stenerud missed a pair of late field goals which would have won the game for Kansas City, Garo Yepremian finally ended the marathon with a 37-yard boot, making it 27-24 in favor of the Dolphins.

The loss was devastating for the Chiefs, as they would not reach the playoffs again until 1986. Kansas City was undone by four turnovers and missed Stenerud kicks, but the game remains one of the NFL’s all-time best.
