The aftermath of the draft still unfolds with much of the talk centering on the Kansas City Chiefs’ selection of one Tyreek Hill. The controversial pick has split Chiefs Kingdom in a dilemma of morals, principles and talent.
Here, however, I do not want to delve into the murky waters of the Hill situation. Rather, I want to look at the impact of the Chiefs’ latest second-round draft pick Chris Jones, especially on some current players on the roster, in particular one beast of a nose tackle Dontari Poe.
Firstly I should say that I love the Chris Jones pick. He is a physical specimen who can play all along the defensive line, in the 3-tech or 5-tech, and won’t be required to start straight away, only used to spell Poe and fellow defensive line beasts Jaye Howard and Allen Bailey. Between the three of them, the Chiefs boasted an impressive defensive, who were stout in the run and offered a pass rush.
With the three returning this next season, Kansas City are in prime position to have another top notch defensive line. Chris Jones is coming into a position group where he will not be expected to start straight away and can learn from solid, experienced NFL starters. This is ideal for the Chiefs to groom him into a potential star a few years down the line.
This leads me to the crux of the issue… does the selection of Chris Jones mean Dontari Poe is now expendable?
