Alongside Peters, the Chiefs have two third round picks in Philip Gaines and Steven Nelson. Gaines is exceptionally quick, and performed well in the slot in his rookie year, but suffered a season ending injury in the Week 3 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Nelson, meanwhile, had a tough rookie year in which he hardly saw the field but did flash potential in the latter few games of the year playing out of the slot.

The issue with either of these players is that neither have the desired height to play on the outside, with Nelson standing at 5-foot-10 and Gaines at 6-foot-0. However, Gaines is of slighter stature, only carrying 193 pounds, and John Dorsey is a fan of larger, physical corners, and Gaines, with his elite speed and agility, is much more suited to the slot.

This left Dorsey with a serious need at corner, and he resulted by trading back multiple times, acquiring as many picks as possible, and picking up three corners in the third, fourth and sixth rounds respectively. The three corners that Dorsey took are:

KeiVarae Russell – 3rd round, Pick 3 – Notre Dame

Eric Murray – 4th round, Pick 8 – Minnesota

D.J. White – 6th round, Pick 3 – Georgia Tech

It will be interesting to see where John Dorsey sees these young corners in respect to the roster. Russell and Gaines will most likely be competing for the second outside corner spot opposite of Peters, while the other, Nelson and Murray will most likely become the slot corner, unless if Ron Parker continues performing in that role from last season, though that is doubtful due to the retirement of Hussain Abdullah and loss of Tyvon Branch in free agency.

Whatever the case, the first five corners on the Chiefs roster will all be on their rookie contracts, and none will have more than a full season’s playing experience in the NFL. That is inherently worrying. When Bob Sutton’s scheme is factored in, it becomes even more troubling.
