The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting a visit with wide receiver Jeremy Kerley.
We all know the Chiefs need a receiver who can compliment Jeremy Maclin, and perhaps general manager John Dorsey sees that in Jeremy Kerley. Kerley, who has spent the first five seasons of his career with the New York Jets, is hitting the free-agent market for the first time and is coming to Kansas City for a visit on Friday, per Adam Caplan.
Kerley, 27, gives the Chiefs a couple of dynamics. While he is not an elite receiver by any means, he is a quality route-runner and a nice player on third downs. He also excels in the return game, finishing second in punt return yardage last year, only to Darren Sproles.
Of course, that means should he be signed, he is replacing somebody. Would it be Frankie Hammond Jr., Jason Avant or De’Anthony Thomas? Thomas seemed to have some issues with the team last year after being medically cleared to return from his Week 11 concussion. However, Hammond Jr. is the backup punt returner and lowest on the depth chart. Then there is Avant, who is the slot guy and a free agent.
Kerley caught only 16 passes for 152 yards last season, but in 2014 caught 38 balls for 409 yards. In his best season of 2012, Kerley went for 56 catches and 827 yards. He is not a second option, but could be a nice slot receiver. Alex Smith would easily be the best quarterback he’s ever been with and at 27 years old, Kerley might be worth the low-money flier.
