All offseason fans spend their time assessing, speculating, and predicting things ranging from how our team’s will attack free agency to how many wins they’ll get in the regular season.

It’s a tiresome job but it’s our duty and privilege as die-hard fans to put the time into sharing our reasoning on why the chips will fall a certain way. It’s fun but by the time the draft rolls around we  become rather fatigued by the tsunami of mock drafts that come crashing down on us fans.

My model is simple. When we’re talking about free agency we’re talking about players that have experience in the league so success, scheme, and age would be the main focal points.

John Dorsey hasn’t been perfect in free agency but has done pretty well by not overspending or completely missing on player signings with maybe the exception to resigning Dwayne Bowe.

Every year there’s been one or two players that outplayed their inexpensive contracts proving to be great value to the team which definitely contributed the Chiefs having three straight years of winning records. In 2013, it was Husain Abdullah, Geoff Schwartz, Frank Zombo, Sean Smith and Jaye Howard.

In 2014 it was Albert Wilson, Charcandrick West, Vance Walker, and Josh Mauga. In 2015 it was Tyvon Branch, and Jeremy Maclin. We obviously all agree that in 2013 Dorsey put on a clinic nabbing all those players to cheap contracts but every year from then there’s been a couple more. Who could he be looking at in 2016?

Although there’s been some good players he’s found, Dorsey isn’t prone to signing big fish in free agency so we’d be foolish to believe otherwise. Here is a list of five free agents that would suit Dorsey’s interest and price.

Eric Weddle

I know, I know, the Chiefs are going to sign Eric Berry to a monstrous contract and it’s a waste of time to even write this player’s name down. Let’s just pretend that Kansas City decides not to pay Berry top dollar and looks to address a critical position in another way. There’s another Eric who’s really good and could be considerably cheaper allowing the Chiefs to eventually draft another safety and not have a huge drop off in the mean time.

Weddle missed three games last year with a groin injury and is aging but it’s not too far-fetched to believe he’ll be a top 10 safety in the league for another 2-3 years. Signing Weddle would save the cap space, not have a big drop off at the position, and buy time to groom another young player to take over.
