With Daniel perhaps leaving, the Chiefs only have Tennessee product Tyler Bray and former Georgia standout Aaron Murray. It will be interesting to see if they go after a more experience second quarterback.
There have been a few names thrown around to the Chiefs, such as Robert Griffin III, as possible options for the team. But one name that stands out could in fact be Alex Smith’s former backup, who eventually replaced him in San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick.
Kaepernick has had the very definition of an up-and-down career. Taking over for a concussed Smith, he eventually lead the Super Bowl only to be bested by the Baltimore Ravens. Kaepernick had two good years before 2015, which saw him benched and eventually place on injured reserve. In those good years he was able to put up decent numbers and was a dual threat quarterback. He has some big upside for potential if he can get in the right system with the right coach.

Kaepernick is currently under contract with the 49ers, and might be hard to acquire unless he is released by the team. In seems possible given he has come out saying he does not want to be with his current team. So there is a slight chance he could ask for a release, which is the only real way the Chiefs could acquire him. Another trade with San Francisco for another quarterback would just not work for the team for what they would give up and the cost of his current contract.
The possibility of Colin coming to the Chiefs, however, is interesting. He has shown flashes of being a good signal caller and with his overall athletic ability would make an interesting prospect for the Chiefs. However, this scenario is more like a pipe dream rather than a realistic option for Kansas City. For starters, the amount he would cost if there was a trade for KC, and how current quarterback Alex Smith would feel with the player that ended up replacing him as his backup again, might not be the best option.
Regardless of what the Chiefs decide to do in terms of a new backup or replacing with one of the current players on the roster, they have some decisions about the position that needs to be addressed. For now, the Chiefs would seem content to keep Murray or Bray as a backup, if they are ready, if not they might be in the market for a cheap, but good option, just in case Smith would go down.
What do you think, Addicts? Would you like to see what Reid could do with Kaepernick? Or is there a better option out there for the team? Let us know what you think in the comments.
