In 2013, the big offseason (trade) acquisition was for QB Alex Smith who cost two 2nd round picks (cornerstone draft pieces in two different years). Signing CB Sean Smith was the biggest free agency move. The Chiefs also drafted OT Eric Fisher 1st overall, TE Travis Kelce in the 3rd round & also nabbed RB Knile Davis with a compensatory pick. Other offseason moves included TE Anthony Fasano, DT Mike DeVito, S Quintin Demps, S Husain Abdullah, QB Chase Daniel and a trade for Anthony Sherman.
In 2014, the Chiefs biggest offseason free agent acquisition was probably DT Vance Walker… or DB Kurt Coleman. They also signed ILB Joe Mays, OG Jeff Linkenback and CB Chris Owens.

In the first round they took OLB Dee Ford, they didn’t have a second round pick that year because of the trade for Alex Smith in 2013 and in the third round they took CB Phillip Gaines. They also lost linemen LT Branden Albert, OG Jon Asamoah and OG Geoff Schwartz but didn’t replace any of them with an early round draft pick.
In 2015, the Chiefs signed free agent wide receiver Jeremy Maclin who was a big fish and helped transform their passing game. They also picked up LG Ben Grubbs (via trade) from New Orleans, OL Paul Fanaika, and S Tyvon Branch… most notably. Then they drafted Marcus Peters in the first, Mitch Morse in the second and Chris Conley in the third round. They also picked up corner Steven Nelson with a third round compensatory pick.
So, who will that big name free agent signing be this year?
