Kansas City may have an opportunity to add free agents this offseason with ample cap space. The problem it faces is the impending contracts of Dontari Poe, Travis Kelce and Fisher in the 2017 offseason. Fisher has a $11.5 million option that the team could pick up for 2017 but that is a very large number to carry. Kelce and Poe have a year left on their contracts and the Chiefs could be smart to lock them up early to avoid having to pay the market rate.

While Kansas City has to consider the players that are coming up for new contracts soon, there are also additions it needs to make this offseason. Kansas City must find another wide receiver to pair with Jeremy Maclin. Chris Conley may be the answer but Albert Wilson has already played past his abilities. He may make a good slot receiver down the line but he doesn’t get enough separation and he doesn’t attack the ball when it is thrown his way. He also has an issue of diving for passes that could have made big differences.

The Chiefs must look to improve their offensive line. Reid may be able to play right tackle but looked great as right guard as well. The Chiefs appear to have their left tackle in Fisher but the rest of their line is a question mark especially if they don’t bring back Allen. Mitch Morse looked like the future at center but with the second concussion of his young career, his future is in question. Zach Fulton looked fantastic at center filling in for Morse but limits the line because he doesn’t move like Morse can.

The other big question mark is Ben Grubbs. At this point it’s a question of whether or not he will be able to play moving forward. After signing him to a contract extension, Grubbs suffered a neck injury and was put on IR. If they bring in another guard in the offseason that could be telling about Grubbs’ future.

While Kansas City started slow this season with Reid and Dorsey running the show, the Chiefs have built a formidable team and have the pieces to make it even better. They have the money this offseason to be able to make the moves to take the next step. If they can keep the team together they have a window that should allow them to compete for the Super bowl over the next several seasons.
