Coffee with the Chiefs – Basking in the glow

Good morning, Addicts! You, much like me, were likely able to spring out of the bed this morning, thinking about nothing other than the Kansas City Chiefs finally getting off the playoff snide. It had been a long time coming – 22 years to be exact – but it has finally happened.

Now, the Chiefs will be playing next Saturday to take on the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. While New England is the defending champion and the gold standard of the National Football League, it has lost four of its last six.

Here is the news you need to know…

Why the Chiefs can beat the PatriotsAdam Teicher of ESPN

"If momentum counts for anything, the Chiefs have a huge advantage. They won 10 straight to finish the regular season and then dominated the Houston Texans in Saturday’s 30-0 first-round playoff victory. Meanwhile, the Patriots have lost their last two games, both against opponents who failed to make the playoffs."

The playoff drought is over, and who knows what could be next?Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star

"The Chiefs beat the Texans 30-0 in an AFC Wild Card game Saturday at NRG Stadium, across the parking lot from the abandoned dome where they won their last playoff game. Twenty-two years. Long enough ago that the Internet, for all intents and purposes, did not exist. Neither did this building, nor the team the Chiefs just beat, nor high-definition televisions many watched on."

Chiefs know they could be without another offensive starEric Prisball of USA Today Sports

"The Chiefs were discounted and largely forgotten after losing star running back Jamaal Charles to a season-ending knee injury Oct. 11. But after dropping to 1-5 the following week, they haven’t lost since. They have reeled off 11 straight victories, including their first playoff win since 1994 with the 30-0 victory over the Houston Texans in Saturday’s wild-card round."
