84. Trent Green honors father with win vs. Raiders (2005)

Sometimes, the sport of football is more about humanity than it is the scoreboard. In Nov. 2005, such was the case when Trent Green lost his father before a contest between the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City was in the midst of a playoff chase, and losing to the sad-sack Raiders would have been a death null.

In the fourth quarter, Kansas City fell behind 23-20 before mounting one last charge. Green hit Larry Johnson with a pass in the flat, which Johnson took down to the Oakland 1-yard line with a second remaining. After a timeout, the Chiefs decided to go for the win instead of kicking for the tie, and Johnson plunged in for the 27-23 victory. Head coach Dick Vermeil said that the play was inspired by the death of Green’s father, with the team wanting to win for its quarterback.
