Fire Bob Sutton

I understand that Bob Sutton was not the reason that Kansas City lost to the Vikings this past weekend. The defense did their part, it was the offense that cost the Chiefs the win. However, that was not because Bob Sutton did a better job than in KC’s previous loses. No, Sutton was his same emotionless and adjustment-less self. It just happened to be a week where Sutton’s one and only game plan and KC’s defensive talent was enough to hold a mediocre offense in check. Sutton didn’t re-invent the wheel, the Vikings just didn’t have the ability to beat KC the way that Denver, Green Bay, and Cincinnati did (or a need to put together a game winning drive like Chicago did).

The Chiefs may be short a quality coverage corner or two, but I still contend that the Chiefs have the defensive personnel to be a top defensive unit. Wether its more a lack of creativity in terms of scheme (coverages and blitz packages) or a lack of motivation and accountability is irrelevant. What’s clear is that both are an issue with the KC defense.

I don’t know if firing Sutton would improve either of these areas, but it couldn’t hurt. If nothing else it would at least send a message that people are going to be held accountable for not getting the job done. In terms of who could step up and fill the defensive coordinator spot if Sutton was fired, Gary Gibbs is the logical choice. He has 13 years of experience as a defensive coordinator between college and the NFL. Do I have confidence that Gibbs would be better than Sutton? No, but at least it would be trying SOMETHING. Worst case scenario, things don’t get any better and the Chiefs are in the same place they currently are. Best case scenario, the move sparks the defense and they start living up to their ability.

I see this as a no lose option. I’m just not sure it’s possible for a defensive coordinator to do less with the talent on this roster than Sutton has so far this season.

Next up, the offensive coaching staff…
