Chiefs: They still don’t make sense

Then there is now-expected blaming of Alex Smith, and ever-more-expected blaming of the rest of the coaching staff. On this site from earlier in the week you can find articles questioning if Smith should stay the starter and making the case to can Reid after this season. And while each of those makes some sense than saying the Chiefs just suck, neither really seems to be an answer.
The knock on Smith is that he would not throw the ball down field. But he is doing that now more than before, and if he keeps gaining yards at the current pace, he will have thrown for more this year that at any other point in his career.
Reid can, and should, take the blame for a lot of Kansas City’s woes. Whether it was underusing Jamaal Charles or routinely trying to be too clever in the offensive play calling, he has made any number of questionable (or flat out wrong) decisions. But he also managed to turn this team around in one offseason (something nonsensical in itself), and has had them within striking distance of the Broncos in Week 2 for two years straight now.
And while he has made more than few questionable calls in those games, it was execution that failed to get into the end zone last year, and a fumble by the most trustworthy option on the team (Charles) that undid Kansas City this season.
Finally, for all the mistakes and down right awfulness that has been demonstrated this season, K.C. is one fumble and one game ending drive from being 3-2. Think about that. This team looks like it is dead in the water, but were that close to being only one game back in the division. I don’t know about you, but that seems crazy to me.
So you can blame Smith, Reid, Bob Sutton, or the blood moon. And you would probably be at least partially right. But however you slice it, the Chiefs just don’t make sense.
