When the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Houston Texans on Sunday, a few things were established. The Chiefs offensive line held up against the best defensive end in the league. Jamaal Charles needed just 21 touches to keep the offense moving. Travis GronKelce took almost no time at all to continue building his legend. Jeremy Maclin’s presence was felt, as the Houston defense had to account for a real top-caliber receiver, and that made Alex Smith’s life so much easier. But beyond that, Andy Reid renewed my faith in him as a coach.
Last season, the Chiefs started off the year with a home loss to the eventual second-worst team in the NFL, the Tennessee Titans. It was a disaster of talent, coaching, and every other imaginable factor. Then throughout the season, Reid continued to make questionable coaching decisions that led to the Chiefs being one of the most bipolar teams in the NFL. Beating the Patriots and Seahawks didn’t matter because they lost to the Titans and Raiders.
I never wanted Reid gone, I just couldn’t trust him last year. And he’ll probably throw a game away this year with a deep pass on 4th and 1 or a clock management fiasco comparable to the Giants’ loss on Sunday night. But with the gameplan that Andy Reid and his coaching staff took to Houston, I feel like I can finally see this team’s ceiling, and it goes higher than I thought before week one.
Now the next test comes with Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos coming into Arrowhead on Thursday night.
