With Sean Smith being suspended for the first three games of the regular season, this position has become much more interesting. Phillip Gaines is the favorite to take Smith’s spot while he’s gone, with veteran Jamell Fleming and first-round rookie Marcus Peters battling for the other starting spot. My guess? The job goes to Peters, with Fleming starting in the slot.

The other option in the slot would be third-round pick Steven Nelson. The former Oregon State star is known for being physical, but would the Chiefs feel comfortable in putting a pair of rookies on the field at once against Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers? If they do, it either speaks volumes about Peters and Nelson or about the lack of confidence in the rest of the group.

Marcus Peters also comes into camp on the bubble. After starting out strong in 2013, Cooper fell off badly down the stretch and then lost his starting position in 2014. He is in danger of losing his spot on the team, but likely breaks camp with Kansas City. When Smith comes back, hard decisions will have to be made.
