With Eric Berry back, this gladly becomes a very stocked group. Provided Berry is at full strength, he will start at strong safety and Ron Parker at free safety. Parker was given a five-year, $30 million deal in the offseason, so Kansas City clearly believes in his abilities on the back end. Husain Abdullah will be rotating in on a consistent basis since he can both blitz and cover, along with play the run.
Behind them, we have a new face in free-agent signing Tyvon Branch. The Chiefs were looking for a player who can cover a tight end and play in the box against the run, something Branch excelled at doing while with the Oakland Raiders. However, Branch has struggled to stay healthy the past two years. Perhaps a decreased role will help Branch with this issue.
With only one spot remaining, the battle will be on with the oft-injured Sanders Commings and Kelcie McCray. Commings has flashed when healthy in camp but he can never stay on the field. McCray is a liability on defense, but he is one of the better special teams players on the team. Look for this to be a fun battle toward the back of the roster.
