Chiefs Things I Think: Pre-Camp

Knile Davis needs to get 175 touches in 2015. 134 carries last season was a good start, although Davis started in place of Jamaal Charles in multiple games.  in 2015, Reid and his staff need to keep Charles healthy by giving the ball to Davis more.  A 2-to-1 Charles-to-Davis ratio and 175 overall touches for Davis should help in Charles’ overall longevity as well.

The Chiefs need Marcus Peters to win the #2 cornerback position. Peters is an outside man cornerback from all he’s shown in his NCAA career.  Some outside guys struggle in the slot initially, ask Brandon Flowers.  Philip Gaines has performed well both outside and in the slot.  Given they will both likely need to start outside in 2016 (See #2),  Peters will profit more from starting experience as he catches up with Gaines.  The two of them look like they are the future of the cornerback tandem.

John Dorsey isn’t done, but I don’t expect a spending spree. There could be some movement on current free agents.  Chris Clark covered Evan Mathis and some other options and Ben Almquist wrote about extending Dontari Poe.  If I am John Dorsey, I want to keep some funds on-hand in the even of an injury or an upgrade that requires a signing.  If Ben Grubbs or Jeff Allen gets hurt, Mathis would be the first call, but I don’t see him being signed pre-camp.  Brandon Spikes could be an addition If Mauga and Wilson prove they can’t stop the run, but not a pre-camp signing.  Camp changes a lot of things.  There will be changes, but expect them to be bottom-third of the roster unless a strong need arises.

Quarterbacks report soon, on July 28th.  The season is right around the corner!

That’s it for me.  I’ll have more next week.
