3. Don’t Call It a Comeback

This was the game that silenced skeptics.

The Chiefs had just three days to prepare for Chip Kelly’s enigmatic offense, and the spotlight smothered Reid as he returned to his former stomping ground.

Despite the sideshow, the bell rang, and the Chiefs came out throwing haymakers.

The win was glorious. The gatorade bath was awesome. But the gem was the post-game interview.

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio has been covering the Eagles since the early 90s; he and Reid are familiar with each other’s work, to say the least.

After leaving Philadelphia, the head coach was wooed by the Arizona Cardinals. And when a Phoenix-based radio show, Burns and Gambo, dialed Paolantonio’s number, headlines emerged.

Per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the former beat writer said:

"This team was really almost 1-15, and I don’t know why in the world you would hire a guy who had a near 1-15 record who you killed when he came into town. Just doesn’t make any sense to me. I am frankly flabbergasted that they would even consider hiring him."

Considering that Paolantonio ignored the previous 13 seasons—a stretch that saw the Eagles tally 44 more wins than losses—I’m guessing the news didn’t sit too well with Reid.

All of that laid the foundation for the above gem—a post-game medley of passive-aggressive jabs.

First, Reid interrupts Paolantonio’s opening question, blurting out, “Are you blocking me?” while making his way to the locker room. He then ignores the reporter while hugging Michael Vick.

Immediately afterward, another member of the Eagles grabs his jacket to get his attention. Initially, though, Reid seems to think it was Paolantonio, which leads to an incredulous look of “Did you put paws on Papa Bear?”

Reid, unmistakably upbeat and at peak lovableness, smooches the back of the guy’s head prior to Paolantonio asking him about Alex Smith. “Um, I thought he did a great job,” Reid mutters as his RPMs plummet to oh-god-he’s-still-here territory. Speaking to a staffer, he then adds, “Keep walking, Brian. This guy’s not that important right here.”

Paolantonio follows up by asking about a clutch throw that Smith made late in the game. Reid stops him mid-sentence and, with a wry smirk, says, “That was huge. That was a big one. That was as big as Sal Paolantonio, baby.”
