2015 NFL Draft: Who history says the Chiefs will select in second round

The Kansas City Chiefs have their second-round pick for the first time in three years, and it is critical. After trading the previous two to the San Francisco 49ers for Alex Smith, general manager John Dorsey is working with a full deck in the early part of the second day for the first time since coming on board.

While all the pre-draft talk on ESPN and NFL Network centers around the first round and all the mega-stars, it is the second and third rounds that are vital to a team’s success. When you look at Kansas City, where would it be without Jamaal Charles, Travis Kelce and Justin Houston? These men were all Day Two picks who have come to the Chiefs and been game-changers.

So who could Kansas City land with the 49th overall pick come May 1? Here are the last 10 men drafted in that position:

2014: New York Jets, Jace Amaro, TE

2013: New York Giants, Johnathan Hankins, DT

2012: San Diego Chargers, Kendall Reyes, DT

2011: Indianapolis Colts, Ben Ijalana, OT

2010: San Francisco 49ers, Taylor Mays, S

2009: Seattle Seahawks, Max Unger, C

2008: Philadelphia Eagles, DeSean Jackson, WR

2007: Cincinnati Bengals, Kenny Irons, RB

2006: New York Jets, Kellen Clemens, QB

2005: Minnesota Vikings, Marcus Johnson, OT

First of all, what is a Kenny Irons? Secondly, we see a pretty mixed group. Amaro and Hankins are both still developing but have promise, while Johnson, Clemens, Irons, Ijalana and Reyes are either busts or marginal players. Then there are Jackson and Unger, both Pro Bowl talents who elevated their teams. Of course, Jackson is especially worth mentioning since Andy Reid drafted him.

If Kansas City wants to take the quantum leap and become a Super Bowl team, uncovering hidden gems in this spot is key. The Chiefs will have plenty of options to choose from, most likely seeing solid players at receiver, guard and inside linebacker falling toward them.
