The Chiefs should sign Chris Owens

Currently, the Kansas City Chiefs have four corners who could realistically see playing time in 2015. Sean Smith and Phillip Gaines are slated to be starters, with Jamell Fleming and Marcus Cooper as the primary backups.

The problem is in the slot, where Kansas City has nobody on the roster capable of doing the job. Smith, Fleming and Cooper are strictly outside-the-numbers guys, and while Gaines can play inside, his skill set is suited to be on the perimeter. Last year, the Chiefs relied mostly on Chris Owens to play in the slot and he was solid for most of the season. Owens’ play did tail off toward the end of the season after he was banged up with a knee injury, costing him five games.

Owens, 28, is not a great corner by any stretch, but he’s familiar with the defense and fits the system. Even better, Owens would be excellent depth if general manager John Dorsey drafts a corner to use in the slot. The cost is going to be minimal, with Owens sure to accept a one-year deal for less than $1 million. The worst-case scenario is Owens doesn’t make the team, and Kansas City walks away with clean hands and full pockets.

Owens is not ideal to start in the slot again, but the Chiefs could do worse. What say you? Bring him in or pass?
