Report: Kansas City Chiefs Sign Josh Mauga To 3-Year Extension

facebooktwitterreddit

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that inside linebacker Josh Mauga has inked a three-year, roughly $8 million extension with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Being that Derrick Johnson and Joe Mays missed the bulk of last season, Mauga understandably had his share of highs and lows. He had only notched one start under his belt prior to 2014.

Although the veteran—remember, he played four years with the New York Jets before arriving in Kansas City—was the team’s second-leading tackler (82) last year, he also tied for the second-most missed tackles (21) among NFL inside linebackers.

The bottom line is that Johnson is rebounding from a torn Achilles and entering the last year of his contract, and while Mauga’s stock nosedived throughout the latter half of 2014, he at least has experience in Bob Sutton’s defense.

Since the specifics are still being ironed out, there’s no way of telling how the deal affects the Chiefs’ 2015 cap space.
