Jamaal Charles
When it comes to restructuring, Kansas City doesn’t have a lot of options. Either its big-money players are past their prime, or their contracts are set to expire, offering nothing to restructure.
At age 28, Charles has shown no signs of slowing down, and he figures to remain in the picture in the near future. If the Chiefs restructured his 2015 base and roster bonus, they could save $3.72 million in cap space.
Alex Smith
For the record, I don’t see Dorsey touching Smith’s contract. However, he’s one of the few players with long-term deals who, over the next few seasons, is more likely to be retained than not.
If the Chiefs GM is in a jam, he could trim Smith’s 2015 base from $11.9 million to $5 million, which would grant him $5.175 million in immediate cap space without overloading future seasons with dead money.
