Do The Chiefs Have A Top 5 Defense?

Since the 2013 season ended in its ignoble fashion, I have been repeating ad nauseum that the Chiefs’ secondary would be the unit that kills them in 2014. With CB Brandon Flowers cut and S Eric Berry banged up, that seemed a certainty.

Then, the team lost DE Mike DeVito and MLB Derrick Johnson – the long-time field general of the defense – to season-ending injuries in the first game of the season. The nail was in the coffin.

However, apparently unbeknownst to the national NFL pundit class, the Chiefs defense has played lights out from Week 3 on. If it keeps things up, it will finish as one of the league’s top defenses.

Here’s why I think the Chiefs will finish the year with a Top 5 defensive unit:
