Charles practiced for the second straight day today but did not take first team reps according to reports from Arrowhead. Andy Reid said in his post practice press conference he thought Charles looked ‘okay’ but they were going to wait and see how he felt tonight and tomorrow before determining his status for Sunday.
Should Charles not be able to play then Knile Davis will take over as the starting running back for the Chiefs. In three games where Davis has taken over for Charles he has scored six touchdowns and averaged over 100 yards of total offense. There are concerns with him in terms of pass blocking and his ability to create big plays. Still he has proven to be a capable spot starter through his first 18 career games.
One would think the Chiefs will employ a similar strategy as they did last week against Miami without Charles, focusing on short passes and clock management. Where Charles’ presence will be significantly missed is in the red zone, an area where the Chiefs have struggled this season.
Even if Charles does play we should probably expect Davis to see significant snaps. Recovering from a high ankle sprain is no easy feat, with the injury typically knocking out players for three or four weeks. The fact Charles is even practicing is incredible, so it wouldn’t be fair to assume Charles will cary the load on Sunday if he does play.
