Week one was a drag, will week two be any better?
On paper the Chiefs are in for a lot of trouble. They are missing three starters on defense (Derrick Johnson, Mike DeVito, and Joe Mays) and two more on offense (Donald Stephenson and Jeff Allen). Add the inactive De’Anthony Thomas and the Chiefs are without several players that were pivotal to them being a successful team.
Denver, meanwhile, is in good shape. They will be without Wes Welker for the second straight week but they are mostly healthy. Peyton Manning will be at home with another week of work behind his rearranged offensive line and are coming in with some confidence after beating Indianapolis to start off the season.
So what exactly is positive about this matchup? Kansas City has nothing to lose.
Denver beating Kansas City is expected (they are 14 point favorites according to some Vegas books) and also carry the pressure to work their way back to the Super Bowl. KC on the other hand has zero expectations and, according to some, are ‘playing out the season.’
In some ways the Chiefs are built to slow down Denver. They have four guys – Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Dontari Poe, and Dee Ford – who specialize in rushing the passer. They added guys like Vance Walker and Jaye Howard to supplement the pass rush. And the secondary, though highly unproven, is full of speed and guys who can tackle.
Add in more sanity with Jamaal Charles touches and more looks to Travis Kelce and Anthony Fasano and maybe the Chiefs can keep this closer than some expect.
Hey, if you can’t dream now then when can you? Go Chiefs!
