PRESUMED LOCKS
The following players would seem destined to be cut by Tuesday afternoon:
Wide receivers Fred Williams, Darryl Surgent, Jerrell Jackson, and Deon Anthony; offensive linemen Ben Gottschalk and Otis Hudson; tight end Adam Schiltz; cornerbacks Damond Smith, Vernon Kearney, and Justin Rogers.
These ten players have seen virtually no playing time in the first three preseason games which probably means the writing is on the wall for their departure this week. It is hard to make the team if you are not on the field and these players simply have not been on the field.
Of all the areas on the team, the wide receiver position would seem the most likely to be gutted this week. Kansas City has 13 wide receivers on the 90-man roster and are probably only going to keep about six. Dwayne Bowe and Donnie Avery are locks for the roster so that means there are 11 guys competing for four spots. We know Albert Wilson, Frankie Hammond Jr., Kyle Williams, Junior Hemingway, and A.J. Jenkins are going to be in that mix so that makes things tight for the other six receivers on the roster.
Injuries on the defensive side of the ball are probably going to save some jobs this week, especially in the front seven. Mike DeVito, Mike Catapano, and Kyle Love are all dealing with injuries on the defensive line, and linebackers Joe Mays and Josh Mauga have missed time to injury, too. This probably means someone like Alonzo Highsmith will stick around for one more week simply as an insurance policy.
