Key Figures: Ron Parker and Sean Smith
At Stake: A starting spot
Projected Leader: Ron Parker
Ron Parker is a surprise leader as the number two cornerback next to Marcus Cooper. After the release of Brandon Flowers it was assumed the two starting corners would be Smith and Cooper, but Parker has proven to be the better cornerback through the first two weeks of camp.
The battle between the two has seemed to heat up over the last week. Smith has made some progress in man coverage and has been able to make a few plays against the number one offense. Given Kansas City’s need for depth in the secondary, particularly at safety, the Chiefs could really use some stability between Smith and Parker on the outside. Hopefully the competition makes them better.
For now, Parker’s speed and ball skills have him in front of Smith with Smith closing in. We’ll see how tonight goes.
