3. Early Returns On The Secondary Are Not Positive

We may need to start rethinking the idea the wide receiver group is the worst group for Chiefs.

All offseason, and really for the last few seasons, we have been railing about the lack of talent at wide receiver, especially the massive drop off from Dwayne Bowe to whomever was selection as the Chiefs “number two receiver.” We were so worried about the wide receivers that many passionately argued for the Chiefs to draft a wide receiver with their first round pick in May.

After yesterday, we may want to start considering the cornerback position the Chiefs worst position group. The receivers we’ve been knocking all offseason dominated the Chiefs secondary in one-on-one drills in such a way that everyone who was there commented on it in one way or another.

Add to the problems that Phillip Gaines, the Chiefs third round pick, may have a concussion, and Sanders Commings is still out with a foot injury. Last season’s big free agent signing Sean Smith has been relegated to the second team, unable to beat out Ron Parker or Marcus Cooper so far in OTAs and camp.

Kansas City’s defense is based on their ability to create a constant pass rush so the burden on the Chiefs defensive success still rests on Tamba Hali, Justin Houston, Dee Ford, Dontari Poe, and the rag-tag group of defensive lineman who have been charged with getting to the quarterback. But at some point the secondary is going to have to cover somebody. Right now it looks like that is not happening.
