Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton

Bob Sutton came over from the Jets, incidentally he was the longest assistant coach in Jets franchise history. What Sutton brought over to this pro-bowl filled defense was an in your face press coverage style of defense.

It worked. For the first nine games of the season the Chiefs were holding opponents to a league low 12 points a game, and still finished 9th in the league allowing only 19.1 points per game. There is something to be said about this Chiefs revamped defense. Then came Denver.

It was sad to see such a dominate defense in the first half of the season suffer bad loses to the defending AFC West champs the Broncos. But it happened. It revealed some major holes in the secondary and elite quarterbacks were able to exploit it and make this defense look silly. That is the problem with his defensive scheme. Yes it is in your face disrupt the passing game, but when the pass rush became stale the secondary was put on high alert.

For 2014, Sutton will look to fix the holes in his defense. This will be done by placing the right players into the right spots so that the defense will have the tools to succeed. While Flowers leaving was a shock the defense can now work to gain some of the dominate attitude it once had. Another year and with the right players the Chiefs defense will look to gain some of that form that made them feared early in 2013.
