It appears the Chiefs want to get the ball rolling now on a new deal for Justin Houston. Jason La Canfora tweets the team has already begun talks with the All-Pro linebacker, but there in nothing imminent.

A new deal would probably not mean much for the 2014 cap situation as Houston has a very low cap number as things stand. Over the Cap has his number set at $1.556 million for the 2014 season, so there isn’t a lot of room to be gained. However, having him locked up for 2015 and beyond would be tremendous. Houston is scheduled to be a free agent this time next year.

Keep in mind the 2015 salary cap is expected to increase by over $10 million from 2014 and then move over the $150 million mark by 2016. There is a lot of room for the Chiefs to work with starting in 2016 so Kansas City does have the future salary cap space to lock him up.
