Leon Sandcastle April Fools Joke: A Football Life

The Kansas City Chiefs have the first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and that means they have the distinction of getting to draft anyone they want, even a fictional character.

NFL Network released a brilliant commercial during the Super Bowl, featuring Hall of Fame safety Deion Sanders. In the commercial, Sanders contemplates a return to football and decides to take part in the NFL Scouting Combine in disguise. Sporting a huge afro and a mustache that would make even the most seasoned 70s male porn star jealous, Sanders arrives in Indianapolis and wows the NFL world. The buzz about Sandcastle spreads and the commercial ends with Sanders, as Sandcastle, being selected by the Chiefs with the first pick in the draft.

The commercial was very funny and did a great job of creating buzz for the NFL Combine and the NFL Draft, which obviously was the goal.

The comercial was so popular, however, that it appears NFL Network is going to milk Leon Sandcastle for all he’s worth…and he isn’t worth much because he doesn’t exist.

Sandcastle has been popping up a lot lately. He was at the Scouting Combine and recently made an appearance in Kansas City for a fake media event. No doubt footage from that event will eventually turn up in a new Sandcastle commercial as the NFL attempts to drum up interest in April’s Draft.

Anyway, today NFL.com released an article claiming the Chiefs will indeed select Sandcastle with the No. 1 pick later this month. In case you haven’t noticed, today is April Fools Day. NFL.com put the article out as if it is a news story and it is accompanied by a pretty funny commercial for “Leon Sandcastle: A Football Life”. It is pretty funny and you should definitely check it out.

I fear the whole Leon Sancastle thing is getting dangerously close to jumping the shark. What do you think, Addicts? Is it time for Sanders to hang up his afro?
