According to agent Paul Sheehy of Pro Stars Sports Agency, via Twitter, the Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent kicker Todd Carter.
Carter was recently cut by the St. Louis Rams.
There is some history with the Chiefs and Carter. The team worked him out in March of 2010 and there were some reports at the time that they were impressed with his leg.
This is a pretty standard move for the Chiefs to make. It never hurts to have an extra leg in camp. While Carter likely doesn’t have a snowballs chance in hell of taking Ryan Succop’s job, he’ll still get some valuable time in front of the KC coaching staff. Should he perform well, the team just might remember him should something unfortunate happen to Succop. He could also earn a recommendation should another team need a kicker.
There is always the chance that the Chiefs could be interested in him as a kickoff specialist but I find it hard to believe the team would want to give two roster sports to kickers and another to a punter.
Carter played college ball at Brandon Carr’s alma mater, Grand Valley State.
