The Kansas City Chiefs believe that they have found their quarterback of the future in Patrick Mahomes, but his long-term development hinges on more than just his progress within the offense.

Patrick Mahomes admittedly has two areas that he needs to improve himself as he develops his rookie year. Skills he needs to address include both his footwork dropping back as well as his unique throwing mechanics. Although he’ll have immense coaching help, He will be solely responsible for conquering those two aspects of his game. However, to be successful or two other areas the team must help him with period

Seth Keysor of ArrowheadPride.com joins us today on the podcast to talk about the other needs Patrick Mahomes has.

The Chiefs have a number of pieces in place along their offensive line and that unit must continue to come together in a cohesive whole in order to aid Patrick Mahomes’ development. Mahomes faced constant pressure while in college and will benefit from a solid line blocking for him. Mahomes rushed over 130 times in each of his last two seasons at Texas Tech. If the line can find a consistent starter at left guard and come together, Mahomes should be able to sit back in the pocket and not to use his legs nearly as often in Kansas City.

Mahomes also had a defense in Lubbock that gave up over 43 points per game according to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star. In Kansas City, he has a very good defense that can border on elite as Mahomes matures and looks towards 2018. He’s already spoken about protecting the ball more and allowing that defense to do its job. If he can execute that philosophy, he will help himself immensely.
