The Kansas City Chiefs have been called a dream pairing for Deshaun Watson as he heads into the 2017 NFL Draft.

Deshaun Watson has drawn comparisons to Alex Smith as he enters the NFL. It’s interesting, then, that NFL.com’s Adam Schein would also call the Kansas City Chiefs a “dream pairing” for Watson as he awaits the 2017 NFL Draft. The former Clemson Tigers quarterback could literally learn for a year from the guy to whom he’s most compared before he likely gets his turn to start in 2018.

"I compare Watson to Alex Smith at the NFL level. And I write that as a compliment, holding both men in high regard. Watson’s an athletic signal caller who knows how to lead and just plain wins. I love Smith, but he isn’t getting younger. Kansas City needs depth at quarterback and an heir apparent to develop at the position.I’m a big Watson fan and believer. But a lot of folks think he’d be well-served with some time to marinate in the NFL. Perfect! Watson can back up Smith for a year or two and learn how to play the position in the pros from the great Andy Reid."

Ask any Chiefs fan whether they want Alex Smith 2.0 for a rookie and the response will be absolutely not. Most fans who are clamoring for some sort of first round rookie are hoping to find someone who can air it out, who can move the chains with ease and add some fourth quarter moxie. The Chiefs haven’t had a gunslinger mentality in years and most fans seem intent on adding it in this draft.

Then again the moment that sort of quarterback is unable to deliver the big win, the moment an interception is thrown, will be the same time that every other fan will remind the other of just how good the Chiefs had it with Alex Smith at the helm—pointing out the mistake-free football play he ensured on the field.

Whether Watson is really just another version of Smith and/or whether or not the Chiefs even want Watson (or if he’ll be available) is all part of the drama of the upcoming NFL Draft.
