Bills rumors: Deshaun Watson draws “love” of Buffalo GM

Fans wanting Deshaun Watson to drop far in the upcoming NFL Draft might be out of luck if Matt Miller of Bleacher Report is right about his latest rumor.
NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller of Bleacher Report has word in his latest Scouting Notebook that Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley is “in love” with Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. That spells trouble for teams like the Kansas City Chiefs who have to wait for over a dozen more selections before their turn is up in a draft when the quarterback run could happen before they even have a chance to move up.
The Bills have decided to bring back Tyrod Taylor for the 2017 season, but there’s certainly no strong commitment to any player on the roster in terms of future security at the quarterback position. Cardale Jones remains on the roster as the developmental quarterback, taken last year in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, but neither player’s presence would preclude Whaley from grabbing a franchise quarterback if he thought Watson was the right guy.

Watson faces questions about his arm strength and other smaller issues, but he also comes with several clutch performances to his name and off-the-chart intangibles that every team has grown to love. Watson is a true team leader with the productivity to match and some team will undoubtedly take him in the first round. Typically, however, those teams in mock drafts are located in the last third of the draft, where teams looking for a future face of the franchise like the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers are all selecting their first picks.
If Watson becomes red hot, then that means the Chiefs might have to be content with Patrick Mahomes, DeShone Kizer or even a lower-tier quarterback. At this point, it’s impossible to tell what’s a legitimate fire and what is smoke being blown via a scout’s random text through an NFL Draft reporter.
