Tony Romo has made it clear that he would be interested in the Chiefs but Kansas City clearly doesn’t feel the same way about the Cowboys quarterback.
For weeks, the rumors have been flying concerning Tony Romo’s future. Will the Dallas Cowboys trade him or release him? Will Romo have a say in where he is going? Will the Cowboys restrict him from playing within the division? Can any team really count on Romo to play a full season?
One of the rumors swirling around is that Romo had four preferred destinations: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans. All the while, every member of the Chiefs staff has said that Smith is their starting quarterback in 2017—from head coach Andy Reid to the team owner Clark Hunt. Still the rumors persisted, but maybe now they can stop.
For the Chiefs to bring in Romo, the price would have to come down considerably from the $24.7 million cap hit he’s due this year and the similar amounts due the next two seasons. For a player who hasn’t logged a full season since 2014, that’s a bit of a tall order. In addition, the Chiefs would look bad in the face of players and agents around the NFL if they’d come out so strongly in favor of Smith only to replace him so quickly within days or weeks. There’s room for the Chiefs to take a young quarterback in the draft but not to land a major free agent or swing a trade for a new starter.
As for Romo, he makes much more sense for the Broncos or Texans. Houston keeps him in his home state and they are also a team ready to win now along with the Broncos. John Elway has already said that he’s uncertain what will happen at quarterback, but the message there is clear that Romo is a real possibility versus Kansas City who have been in unison about their starter.
Perhaps for now the rumors can go away that the Chiefs will ever be involved with Romo. If the love is only side, there’s no chance for a real relationship.
