Nick Foles rumors: Vikings interested in Chiefs quarterback

CHARLOTTE, NC - NOVEMBER 13: Nick Foles

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to release Nick Foles before the new league year begins on Thursday and the Vikings might be waiting to pounce.

The Minnesota Vikings have a bit of a predicament at quarterback. They might aim to fix it with current Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Nick Foles.

Last preseason, Teddy Bridgewater, the Vikings starter at quarterback in 2014 and 2015, went down with a significant knee injury that also included a torn ACL. Bridgewater’s diagnosis was not good and it was even questionable that he could return on a normal ACL tear timeline given the extensive damage. The Vikings then traded for quarterback Sam Bradford in hopes of salvaging their season before it started.

In the end, Bradford led the NFL in completion percentage, but the Vikings still finished under .500 and are apparently searching for further answers at quarterback. Even after trading a first round pick for Bradford, the team is ready to bring in more competition and Foles is the rumored man in their sights.

The real question at this point is this: will the Chiefs actually release Nick Foles as expected? The new league year starts on Thursday so the Chiefs will be on the hook for his near $7 million salary if they don’t release him. That’s a lot of money for a team so snugly up against the NFL salary cap. That said, they might want to keep Foles in case they can’t secure a quarterback in the draft. Foles’ salary is rather high but not exorbitant for a back-up these days.

The Chiefs could also be holding on to Foles for the sake of trading him, but would the Vikings really offer the Chiefs anything after already trading for Bradford last year? Will they call the Chiefs bluff? Or is this just a matter of waiting until the start of free agency?

Lots of questions will be answered about Foles future in the next 24 hours, and it will be interesting to see if the Chiefs really want to keep him or not.
