The Kansas City Chiefs got their quarterback with the 162nd-overall pick, selecting Kevin Hogan.

Kansas City has drafted its first quarterback of the 2016 NFL Draft, taking Kevin Hogan out of the University of Stanford in the fifth round.

Hogan threw for 2,887 yards with 25 touchdowns in 2015, showing that he could compete in the PAC 12. The arm strength seems to be an obvious concern, but he is an intellectual who needs to firm up his delivery.

This is obviously a pick that is going to get some attention. There is no question that Alex Smith is the starting quarterback and will be for at least a few more seasons, but Hogan is going to provide competition at the backup spot. Aaron Murray and Tyler Bray have the experience of being in Andy Reid’s system, but a fifth-round pick suggest the Chiefs believe Hogan has a real shot at winning the job.

Murray was taken with a fifth-round pick back in 2013, while Bray was signed as an undrafted free-agent. It will be fun to watch these three battle it out in training camp with one earning the starting job and the other remaining on the roster as the No. 3.
