Coffee with the Chiefs – Alex Smith goes deep

Good morning, Addicts! It’s a Sunday, but it is no time for rest here with the Kansas City Chiefs. We enter the second day of training camp and the last day before the pads come on. I will once again be at camp and will write all of my observations this afternoon. In the mean time, here is all the latest news, including something about Alex Smith that should make people who love the team very happy.

Training camp report from Day 1Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star

"The Chiefs opened their first full-squad practice with flair, as quarterback Alex Smith unleashed deep throws on three of his first five attempts. Two of them — bombs to Jeremy Maclin and Frankie Hammond — were complete … the Chiefs also worked a great deal on the short passing game, specifically to their running backs, as nine straight passes were thrown to the backs at one point"

Alex Smith looking long for Jeremy MaclinAdam Teicher of ESPN

"This was exactly what the Chiefs envisioned when they brought in Maclin during the offseason as a free agent. It will be more difficult for Smith to get Maclin the ball during games, when he will be a focus of defensive attention."

The two sides of Knile DavisSeth Keysor of Arrowhead Pride

"On the surface that seems a tad absurd. A backup running back isn’t exactly the most important position in the world. It seems about as silly as arguing about backup quarterback or a fifth string corner (what do you MEAN we do that too?). But put Knile Davis’s name in a column and you’re likely to see opinions vary from “Knile is one of the best backup running backs in the NFL” to “Knile sucks and should be replaced.”"
