Chiefs release Cyrus Gray

The Kansas City Chiefs made their first notable cut of the season on Wednesday, when the team announced that it has released running back Cyrus Gray. Gray was a special teams captain last year but got hurt against the Buffalo Bills and was placed on injured reserve.

Gray was originally a sixth-round pick in 2012 and stuck on the roster for the Chiefs despite never seeing consistent playing time. Gray was always a solid special teams player but never stood out to the level of players like Terrance Copper and Junior Hemingway. For his career, Gray rushed 24 times for 99 yards, scoring one memorable touchdown against the Miami Dolphins last year.

With Gray being released, Kansas City now has an opening at the running back position. De’Anthony Thomas was officially moved to wide receiver before this season, meaning that only Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis are assured spots on the depth chart. It would stand to reason that Charcandrick West would be the next man in line considering he took over the active roster spot last year when Gray was injured.

Kansas City will likely be looking to see if anybody can outperform West on special teams. The third running back is primarily going to be working with Dave Toub, making that another fun little camp battle to watch.
