Kansas City Chiefs at San Francisco 49ers Live Thread

Today is going to be a day to remember in Kansas City sports history, but will it be for all of the right reasons?

The Kansas City Chiefs travel to San Francisco to take on the 49ers this afternoon and have an opportunity to make a resounding statement to the NFL that goes beyond their 41-14 drubbing of the New England Patriots. A win on the road and the Chiefs suddenly take a strong place in the race for a playoff spot while also having a resume that features wins over the 49ers on the road, Patriots at home, and a last second loss to the Denver Broncos in Denver.

After the way week one went, how many thought such a resume would be possible heading into the 49ers game?

This isn’t going to be easy, of course. San Francisco is incredibly physical on both sides of the ball and are in a situation where they desperately need a win. Losing at home would be a disaster for their own postseason dreams. Should Kansas City want to win this game then they’ll need to somehow match the intensity they showed on Monday night and then a little bit more. And even that may not be enough.

However, anything is possible. Especially with DAT (De’Anthony Thomas) on the field. Thomas is playing his first regular season game with the Chiefs today and should be a big factor on special teams. How much he’ll see the ball on offense is yet to be seen but with him on the field the Chiefs become incredibly difficult to defend.

Then there is the return of Alex Smith to San Francisco, the place that drafted him with the number one overall pick nearly a decade ago. Smith has to be super amped up to prove the organization that let him go wrong. Hopefully that results in a stellar performance that’s on par with what he’s done for the Chiefs the last three weeks.

Maybe the combination of DAT and Alex Smith are the charge the Chiefs need to get the road victory.
