NFL Rumors Round-Up: Jermichael Finley, Darren Sproles, Branden Albert

A whole bunch of things just went down in the rumor and free agency world so lets take a quick look at things related to the Chiefs. Let’s begin with this tweet from Ben Volin.

Jermichael Finley suffered a very serious injury last season that left him partially paralyzed for a short period of time. He wrote an eerie yet excellent piece for MMQB about the experience. Finley is not planning on giving up football because of the injury, however, and is still looking to sign with a team.

Kansas City may be in the market for a third tight end behind Anthony Fasano and Travis Kelce, but both of them dealt with injury issues all of last season. Would adding Finley, who is coming off such a devastating injury, be a good idea? It wouldn’t seem to be, but it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if Finley got a late look from the Chiefs if he is unsigned by the time training camp roles around.

Kansas City local and Kansas State graduate Darren Sproles will be released today, according to Ian Rapoport.

There is an obvious fit for Sproles as both a local guy and a potential replacement for Dexter McCluster. Sproles is a smart player who lined up just about everywhere for the Saints in his time in New Orleans. The questions would be whether or not he would be a cheaper option than McCluster and how much does he have left in the tank?

Assuming Sproles is healthy and has a few more good years left in him, Andy Reid would have a field day matching up Sproles and Jamaal Charles on the same field. Could you imagine both of them in the backfield at the same time? The possibilities are almost endless. Whether or not it would be the wisest way to spend the Chiefs’ remaining cap space may not be quite as pretty of a fantasy, however.

Darnell Dockett believes Branden Albert is about to sign with the Arizona Cardinals. He Tweeted out his excitement about the prospect earlier today.

Interestingly, Dockett has since deleted the tweet but has left these two up.

There is something to Dockett’s tweet, however. Arrowhead Pride reminded everyone of this exchange involving Sean Smith from last off-season. Is it a lock Albert ends up in Arizona? No, but it wouldn’t and shouldn’t be a surprise if he does.

Hmmm, did Darnell Dockett tweet before the signing that John Carlson was heading for Arizona. All of the “rumors” had Carlson going to, either, Green Bay or the Jets. Funny thing about that signing is Carlson is a mediocre blocker and not the greatest at getting open as a pass catcher. The HC of the Cardinals believes a TE should block first and catch secondly. Why didn’t Docket alert the NFL world to that signing? Yeah, the Cards will, probably, overpay Albert and so be it. He may protect Palmer, but, their run production to his side will not improve.

Cardinals can have Albert. The Chiefs O-Line didn’t suffer when Fisher and Stephenson were manning the Tackle positions late in the season when Albert was hurt & I’m willing to bet that both will become better players than Albert ever was at the Tackle position.

True! Albert isn’t getting younger. His age goes up, his body gets weaker. With that in mind, he might want a high amount of $ so he can retire soon. Something they should think about. I know I would

Love Sproles. But there are lots of needs and a salary cap issue.

  • Bigtexjayhawk

Of course I wanted him when he went to the Saints. He can return punts and be a 3rd down back. Draw/screen big play playmaker. He makes people miss. Great attitude. Would look great in KC gear. Sign him right now!!

Between Sproles, Hester, and McCluster?? I don’t know what to say. Watch some films, pick the best of the 2, then whoever is the cheapest is the 1 I would get. If there’s enough AFTER getting the OL set up.

But work with Fisher and they can let Albert go.
