Chiefs Claim Recently Released 49ers WR Kyle Williams

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Kyle Williams was drafted in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. The team that drafted him let him go yesterday, and through the waivers process, he has ended up with the Kansas City Chiefs.

This move was reported by many on Twitter. Here are some of the notable Tweets on the pickup.

And of course, Williams shared the news on Twitter himself. Kind of:

In four years with San Francisco, Williams caught 47 receptions for 574 yards and four touchdowns. He also returned punts and kicks.

The Chiefs offense has struggled to move the ball through the air in 2013, so one can’t blame John Dorsey and Andy Reid for wanting to take a chance on another wideout. After all, Kansas City has had success with the 49er’s cast-offs so far.

Unfortunately, Williams may be best known for this muffed punt return though:

Very interesting. I wonder who they’ll waive for the spot…

    • toperspective

What’s the story with Jenkins? Any word whether he has a future with the Chiefs?

      • Jason Seibel

I haven’t heard anything but he’ll likely at least finish this season because of his cap hit.

      • berttheclock

At least he has had snaps with the Chiefs. The question by fans of the Niners should be “Does Baldwin have a future with the Niners?”. He has played very little even though the Niners really needed wide outs. Once again, he can not find separation.

        • ArrowFan

I guess the 9ers would rather have Baldwin than Williams or Jenkins.

    • Chris Tarrants

      Hopefully it’s not Hemmingway!

  • erocks49ers

You know smith had a say in that. I can see him sharing time with Avery. He’s fast and will open deep. Smith has had plenty of reps with him when he was on the 2nd team so timing shouldn’t be an issue

    • Jason Seibel

I’m not sure how much say the quarterback has in personnel decisions, but I like what you said about the timing issues.

      • erocks49ers

they picked a guy from his old team when they really didn’t need another receiver or punt returner. I’m sure SMiths input held a lot of weight.

        • Jason Seibel

To quote the editor of this site, I’m sure that John Dorsey has a lot better things to do than go down to the locker room and solicit the input from his employees on who he should hire. I’m thinking that Smith was probably not even consulted. I am sure that Dorsey saw this as another opportunity to get better and he took it.

          • erocks49ers

That would be like buying a used car and not consulting with your friend who drove it for 2 years.

Williams is not a great addition if you just look at film and stats

          • Jason Seibel

He’s better than Chad Hall. That’s all Dorsey needed to know.

          • erocks49ers

if thats so then why pick a guy thats stats are less then impressive when there is so much more out there? Why not Nick Williams or Da’Rick Rogers or Devon Wylie?

          • BigGil

Wylie’s on the Titans. Actually fumbled (and lost) a kickoff last night. So in a sense you could say we kinda got the same thing with Kyle Williams as we would’ve got with Wylie lol

          • erocks49ers

They both must eat at the same greasy diner before games

    • toperspective

Just don’t let him handle kicks

      • BigGil

My first thought: “Just don’t let him field kicks/punts in the playoffs”.

        • erocks49ers

Oh H3LL no! 9ers would have gone to and probably won the superbowl that year if not for those 2 fumbles

      • KCMikeG

Toub would be crazy to change what is already working with our returners, Hope he produces more than Jenkins has so far.

    • berttheclock

He was the third option for Smith and he can get open. Alex Smith came to his defense after the muffed punt and said blame should be shared by everyone for that loss, including himself.

  • BigGil

Reported on official site that Chad Hall was released to make room.

  • BigGil

Also noticed this is the second Arizona State WR they added in as many days (the WR they added to the practice squad, Rashad Ross, also went to Arizona State). Doubt there’s any correlation. Just found it to be an interesting coincidence.

  • Stacy D. Smith

The kid has wheels. He’s better than Chad Hall and AJ Jenkins so on paper we got better.

  • erocks49ers

Oh no oh no! McClusters nursing an ankle injury. Could williams be retuning kicks Sunday?
