Chiefs’ Fans Tweet Thoughts On Preseason Loss To 49ers

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs dropped game No. 2 of the 2013 preseason to the San Francisco 49ers, 15-13.

Some facets of the Chiefs’ game were encouraging (See: Special Teams/Knile Davis) and others, were just downright bad (See: Jon Baldwin/Pass Protection).

We here at Arrowhead Addict pride ourselves on bringing you the best Chiefs’ analysis and opinion possible, but in an effort to give the Addicts a voice, we reached out on Twitter to ask you your thoughts on the game.

Here’s what you had to say:

Chris Holly thinks that emotions got the best of Alex Smith last night:

Brendan Roberts is looking on the bright side:

That’s a pretty good attitude to take for the preseason. While there were things to worry about, the defense and special teams looks great right now.

And here we go with the Jon Baldwin hate:

Frankly, it’s tough to defend No. 89. He was targeted three times and came away with zero receptions last night.

Ryan Mumma blames the offensive line for the Chiefs’ bad offensive showing:

Words of wisdom right here:

I said the same thing last night in one of my recaps. Need to score when you’ve got a short field to work with.

So, we’ve got Alex Smith aka “Captain Checkdown” and now a new nickname for the team:

Hopefully the name doesn’t stick.

Finally, more people piling on Baldwin:

Looks like Mr. Baldwin isn’t the most popular player in Chiefs Kingdom right now.

Didn’t get your tweet mentioned or still have thoughts on the game, addicts? Sound off below.

I ask Baldwin at training camp if he was going to have a good year and he said “yeah, I guess”

    • Mark Bustamante

Yeah I guess? WTF is that?!!!!

      • micah stephenson

Mayby he know something you don’t. Lol

        • Mark Bustamante

Micah I’m sure he knows his days are numbered

        • Suzi Conger

hey micah, will you read my post and tell me your thoughts, kindly plez, lol :-)

    • RepOurChiefs

And I said to that “he doesnt really want to be a chief”..just my opinion

  • Mark Bustamante

Baldwin did nothing does nothing and will not produce anything. Time for us to cut our losses. He sucks!

  • Jason Collins

Everyone is concentrating on a new system. Players are worried about their assignments and missing the little things, like catching the ball, chipping a blitzing LB before going out and recognizing a blitz and adjusting… We were 2-14 they were 13-3. They didn’t look much better than the chiefs. Who should be more worried?

    • Bruce Hurford

I was thinking the same thing last night. I feel like those mistakes (missed assignments) are perfect butt chewing op, RIGHT NOW instead of when it really counts.. Can anyone tell me why Kelce is getting the ball thrown at him instead of Moeaki with first O? Is it just for evaluation? I mean this dude has missed the game winning TD vs. NO, and cost us momentum last night. I’d like to see Moeaki and Fasano catching balls with the same O.

    • Jason Seibel

      Excellent point!

    • Suzi Conger

SF; especially since they have #1 OL protection, #1 D and ck7 has not acchieved a TD yet this season.. I have to say that I loved his (typical) RedZone Over-Throw to his Open receivers.

Very excellent points Jason; my housemate who is a 9er fan was sayin the same last nite while we were watchin the game. I knew our OLine protection would struggle, I was just surprised and disappointed that SF D swarmmed and swamped our firsts/AS11 to that degree…but I will have faith that we will improve..CHIEFS!

  • Suzi Conger

It appears that some ‘fans’ don’t know the definition of ‘check down’…sorry, I have trouble with ignorance ( uneducated )…NFL definition; “a short pass to a RB or TE when ALL THE WR’s are covered” Wake Up (some of you ) folks.

Even the BayArea commentators were sayin’ during the game that AS11 was playin sterling given the ‘grade D-’ OLine protection (80+-% of AS’s plays were rushed/sacked/pressured) and the mega-drops by AS’s well-executed passes.. they felt AS11 would have led KC to at least 1 TD for sure, if not two TD’s but for the OL allowing SF to shamefully Swarm AS11, and the receivers’ sub-par catches ( not to mention our #1 RB, and at this point, Receiver was injury sidelined)…
There is near-zero valid complaints with AS’s QB skills last nite…I agree with the Bay’s commentator’s assessment of AS11, as well as Jason S’s article… AS11 is hardly the problem; OL protection and receivers that can consistently catch are the two most glaring KC deficiencies.

On a positive note, Chiefs fans should be thrilled that we have the superior QB vs SF’s ck7; consider the following; ck7 has the luxury/good fortune to have the NFL #1 O-Line QB protection; near-zero pressure/rushes/0 sacks/tons 0 time to execute passes, #1 D, elite receivers/RB, and yet, to date in ’13, ck7 has NOT accomplished 1 TD!!…wow very poor… Last nite ck7 only got off two passes; one for a -3 yds and 1 RedZone (typical) Over-Throw Failure ( to an open receiver, yet) Harbut took ck7 out not out of fear of injury, but out of embarrassment ( my housemate is a 9er fan )

We have the superior QB with AS11, but our OL protection and receiver drops are deadly deficiencies at this point… Keep in mind the saints game when Alex had decent OL protection and a receiver who rarely drops; wham bam…TD first session with QB rating of 102., 85+% completion ( the only ‘incomplete’ was AS throwing it away to avoid a near-sack)

Andrew, this derogatory incorrect ‘nick-name’ will not catch on, if you and other writers set the record straight, as I have done.

“Captain Checkdown”…how shamefully pitiful,..but, consider the source… Go Chiefs!!

    • micah stephenson

I knew it wouldn’t take you long to run to yo boyfriends defense. Lol. Suzi stop with the Ck7 Ass11 comparisons. No GM or Fan except you would take Ass11 over CK7. Every team we play is gone play us like that. Crowd the line. Stop Charles. Force Alex to win it. He won’t. We don’t have the QB or the wrs.

      • Jim Harper

Wrong Micah. I would take AS11 over CK7. You are not a fan. All I ever see from you on this site is your negative horse crap. Why don’t you go on the Jets site? I know who you really love and you’ve been hating on AS11 ever since you did not get your hero Geno. Sour grapes!

        • micah stephenson

Its hard for me to hide I’m not a Alex Smith fan. He ain’t showed me nothing. Geno prolly wud b better.

          • Suzi Conger

wow micah, that’s not what you were sayin’ in camp…
wow again; saints game; first session TD !!! you call nothing? 85+% completion rate (the only incomplete/throwaway was due to a near-sack / breakdown in OLine), 102 QB rating… you call nothing? and o yea, b4 u start in on the ‘check-down’, plez don’t join the ‘ignorant ‘fans’ ‘ who don’t even know the definition, like your bud ’44′
PS…I notice that your ‘hero’ Geno’s play sucks/stinks…but I agree with other KCC supporters, you should join the Jets’ sites and voice just how wonderful Geno is…try it; see what happens :-)

      • Suzi Conger

micah, yikes, my, you are fickle my friend…last time I saw your posts, you described AS11 as a ‘rock-star’… please check out Calchiefsfan and Robert’s posts to me. There’s nothing to defend regarding AS11…He played very well considering Our OLine protection was pitiful and the well-executed passes by AS simply dropped by receivers. As far as comparing the two QB’s of a game played; it’s commonplace and done all the time (I mean, we are talkin KC vs SF) Sheeesh; you are grouchy today. Hope you feel better soon micah.. CHIEFS!
PS…you are wrong about AS11 vs ck7 Ta Ta :-)
Sorry, I won’t ask your opinon again

        • micah stephenson

Wat I meant by rock star is where Alex goes so did I, the crowd, & the cameras.

    • Calchiefsfan

Good point Suzi. Nobody seems to bring up the fact that Mr Wonderful, ck7, missed a wide open receiver for a sure touchdown, with no pressure on him! What happened MR perfect?
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, our first half schedule is a blessing. We’ll be playing teams that we can beat while getting our offense, (and defense), in sync. We’ll beat them because we now have a qb who can make accurate throws. Kelce is a rook, he’ll start catching those and Bowe and McCluster will be the targets instead of Baldwin.

      • Suzi Conger

Thanx for the reality check Calchiefsfan, I feel pretty alone sometimes with my perceptions; I like PFF for information.. I’ve appreciated your insight(s) and information contained in your posts. My main concern is our inadequate OLine protection, but I have been assured that it will improve..hope so..Chiefs!
Where in Cal do you live?

        • Calchiefsfan

Thanks Suzi, just calling ‘em like I see ‘em, (maybe with a little bit of homerism). The o line is my main concern as well. That’s why I like the easy schedule to start off. Hopefully that will give them time to come together.

          Lake Elsinore, CA

    • Robert Escobedo

I agree with you completely Suzi! AS11 ran up against possibly the best D in the NFL and KC should not panic! Remember, even Aaron Rodgers couldn’t beat it!!! The problem with the Captain Checkdown tag that everyone is throwing around is this: Alex Smith, just like he did in SF, uses those check downs to give the ball to players like Gore (now Jamaal), Vernon (now Moeaki) and other players who can break the game open rather than chuck it down field into well covered receivers. As a Niner fan and NEW Chief fan I thought the Chiefs held their own and looked good, particularly on defense! Once the timing is worked out and more importantly the offensive line lets AS11 look downfield rather than at a collapsing pocket, the Chiefs will be hard to contain! I think Reid was smart to leave the first team in for the whole half to let these guys work it all out. BTW, I’m curious what you all think KC should do with Albert now that Green Bay needs a left tackle??? I know KC doesn’t have much depth on the O Line but maybe trade him for next years draft picks and pick up some of the players cut by teams like SF who have their lines already set?

      • Suzi Conger

Hi Robert, appreciate your reply and insights; welcome, I am an X-SF9er. I agree the D ,special teams and AS11 looked good (considering his inadequate OL protection and well-executed dropped passes. Yes, I agree bout the basic WCO type of ‘check down’ passing; works extremely well (with an accurate QB like AS) and provides more opportunity for the D to rest and be fresh; SF D allowed an average of only 8 pts/game with AS11 at center / SF D allowed an average of 17 more pts/game with ck7 at QB; the D was more ‘worn-out’. If I’m not mistaken, the ‘check-down’ is a variation/part of the WCO type of play? AS11 does not care about the ‘spot-lite’/mega passing yards; he cares about Wins. I like the ‘good hands’/receiver JC, in addition to his super run talent. Was way fun to watch the smooth execution by AS11 in the first session TD last week. Thanx for your words of encouragement. I would tend to keep BAlbert at least part-way through the season; let KC get some wins under their belt before adding more transition; their back-up OLine seems zero, 50+-% of the team are new, plus rookies But I haven’t seen discussions yet as to what others’ think about trading BA…

Wow, what have you been smoking?

      • Suzi Conger

hey 44,,, came out of your cave to peek at the world be4 crawling back, he he You rarely/never address the issue(s), never reply as a mature half-way intelligent adult.. can’t you just shock me, for once 44, and reply intelligently (toward the issue(s); at least pretend….man o man, you are Mega-Sexist. You don’t even know the definition of ‘check-down’… and your childish insipid ‘pump and dump’…relax, get a grip, and thanx for re-comfirming that you are merely an ‘AS hater’. Hope you feel better soon. :-)

        • 44WinMag

You’re Noob, obsessed with defending AS with the same lame azz stats and arguments. You don’t know Jack about the Chiefs, or what it’s like to be a Chiefs fan for 40+ years. But somehow think you can come on here and insult any REAL KC Fan who dares to look at your precious AS in realistic terms. So why don’t you go to the nearest Gay Bar in the SF and quit trolling about.

  • Jason Collins

Do you know what will happen if the Chiefs cut Baldwin? The Pats will pick him up and he’ll have 100 rec and 1200 yrds… The guy is more talented and faster than Bowe, he’s just been on a crappy team for 2 years. Bowe put half the balls thrown at him on the ground the first two years. Ppl in KC forget how awful Bowe was the first couple years. They were saying he was a bust too. Crazy talk

    • micah stephenson

If we had a QB Baldwin would b alot better. With Brady Baldwin wud b a 1000 yrd wr. Watch Amendolas numbers this yr with brady. If amendola was our wr he wud prolly suck. You think Baldwin wud hav a lot of catches if he played for the broncos?

      • Jim Harper

Micah, the ball that Baldwin dropped hit him right between the numbers in his chest. You can’t get a better pass to handle than that.

        • micah stephenson

Nobody has 100 percent catching. The top wrs usually have the most drops too. Baldwin do need to step it up.

      • Calchiefsfan

The problem with Baldwin that I keep reading about is that he runs poor routes and can’t get any separation. Manning would dump a receiver like that in a heartbeat. So no, I don’t think he’d have any catches with Manning cause Manning wouldn’t be throwing the ball ti him.

    • Calchiefsfan

Bowe was not even close to awful. He had 995 yards his rookie season more than twice what Baldwin has had in TWO seasons. He was by far the most productive rookie WR in the NFL that year. Julio Jones had 959 yards his rookie season and A.J. Green had 1,057 yards just to put in perspective. If Baldwin doesn’t step up this year he’s done.

      • Jason Collins

You are high. Bowe isn’t in the same league a jones.. You are one of those dudes who only watches the chiefs. Bowe has been a little (except 2010) than a 2nd WR. There are 5 TEs in the league who are better Receivers. He has lead the league in drops two of his glorious years.. Point of the article

        • Calchiefsfan

First, Bowe has never been called a bust. Second, I’m not high. Third, you need to learn how to read. Fourth, the fact that you put those receivers in such high regard and yet Bowe had a better rookie season than Green should tell you something. Bowe has been from day one and still is a top #1 WR in this league. Baldwin couldn’t carry his jock strap.

          • Jason Collins

Horse crap. In 2009. chiefs fans were saying the same thing, he cant catch. People dont realize how bad the chiefs have been since drafting Baldwin. awful. As for Bowe, Do you realize there were 49 receivers better than Bowe last year and 40 better in 2011.

          • Calchiefsfan

Horse crap back at you. Bowe has made circus catches his entire career. Yes he has had a problem dropping what should have been easy catches but everyone knew it was a mental thing that he needed to correct. Nothing to do with ability. You can’t call a perennial 1,00 yard a year WR a number 2 receiver, (well maybe you can but that’s why I think you’re completely off base). Bowe has been over 1,000 yds per year every year except his rookie year, 995 yards, and last year when he was injured the last 3 1/2 games and was on pace to get 1,000 yards again, on the worst offense with the lowest QB rating in the entire NFL. If Bowe had been playing with Brady or Manning the discussion would be whether he’s a top 5 receiver or not.

    • Jeremy Parkercom

You are the one who is high ifyou Baldwin isanywhere near the caliber WR that Bowe is, dude can’t break the press can’t get out of his breaks in a timely manner, is slow as molasses and can’t hang on to the ball. Anyone that called Bowe a bust in his early years is as deranged as you are thinking that Baldwin is anywhere close to the receiver Bowe is.

  • Robert Escobedo

I think the game was a good indicator that the Chiefs still need time to put it all together. What I found encouraging was KC’s defense looked good (even against SF’s second string, which is better than many first teams) and that Alex moved the ball. The one thing that didn’t look too good was pass protection. Need a better offensive line, period! Overall the Chiefs looked like they can play with possibly the best team in the NFL! As a Niner fan this team reminds me of the Niner team at Harbaugh’s first year. The line was shaky and Alex had to run for his life and of course having Jamaal will help slow future blitzes with screens and dump offs. Still excited for the Chiefs this year!

  • mitch

Jon Baldwin needs to get a new number. He does not deserve to wear OT’s #89.

Sign – WR-Brandon Lloyd – ASAP (before the Chargers get him) – tried of Jonathan “drop the BAL-aldwin”. Brandon can still play the game at a High level, is from Kansas City, he’s a humble Hard Working player and can be a mentor to younger WR and players. Plays will a pro-active attitude not a show boating attitude like (TO or Chad Johnson).

2 preseasons games…team over haul. ..people are really overreacting. Teams that were high powered last season are shaking the rust off as well. Relax guys and have some faith. GO CHIEFS! #youaintseennothingyet

  • Michael Shaw

Wow, why all the negativity??? Our O-line wasn’t that stellar against arguably the best D in the NFL, but yet we got some points. I am a firm believer that had JC been in the line-up a TD would have happened more than once. Knile Davis simply isn’t on the same level as JC…..yet.

Here is another way to look at that game. Our #1 offense and our #1 defense went up against the allegedly daunted #1 offense and defense of the 49ers and yet the score, largely due to a special teams TD by Demps, was 13-6, so by my count our #1′s defeated the #1′s of the 49ers!!! A team that just went to the SB. That in of itself should be making people a “little” more optimistic!!! GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
