Andy Reid Indicates Geno Smith Is Not Out Of Consideration

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs may have traded some high draft picks for former 49ers QB Alex Smith, but that doesn’t mean the team won’t consider selecting West Virginia QB Geno Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has said that Alex Smith is the starter in Kansas City. He said he was eyeing Alex Smith from the moment he landed in KC.

He also said the team might consider Geno Smith.

Wait, what?

Reid said the following while talking to reporters from the NFL owners meetings in Arizona.

From Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

I’ve never heard anyone use the term “out of the water” before but I think what Reid meant was that Geno Smith isn’t out of the running.

Reid’s phraseology might be a little skewed this week, considering he’s been wearing awesome Hawaiian shirts every day. That could be why he is talking about water so much. He’s in a vacation frame of mind.

Anyway, you can’t trust anything Reid says this time of year. The Chiefs will want to keep the other 31 NFL teams guessing right up until they make their draft pick in April. Reid may just want to drum up more interest in the No. 1 pick…

…or he could be serious.

What do you think?

    Yep

Never let em see you sweat! Whatever his intent, of this you can be sure. Andy will do whatever he thinks is in the best interests of the Chiefs. One thing I know for sure is I am having the time of my life with this preseason. Go Chiefs

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Good comment. This has been pretty fun, whatever happens.

    • Joe Myers

Jim !!!!! . What would you call a zone of danger ????

  • nathan82

I think he is just chumming the water(to keep the vacation pun going). The more people see an interest in Geno, the better the chance someone will trade the farm for him. I think the Chiefs may draft a qb still, but I just don’t see how it will be Geno at this point. Especially if they can get a kings ransom for him at #1.

  • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

    Where is Michah?

    • berttheclock

He is screaming “Be still my heart”
Of course, AR would say this, at least to have more teams caught up in the frenzy to trade up with him so they could grab Geno.

      • Scott Mahurin

I LOVE IT!! I have finally relaxed into we are going to win this offseason one way or another. Geno to the Bills wouldn’t kill me if we use the trade down and next year’s first to take a franchise quarterback. He can sit behind Alex til Andy says go…

      • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

        lol

    • micah stephenson

Lol. Im here! I had just reported this on yo Andy wanted Alex all the time story. Lol.

    • njjohn

He must be in the hospital. Either heart issues or an erection that’s lasting more than four hours.

      • micah stephenson

If I had an erection for 4 hours I wudnt b at the hospital, id b at YO GIRLFRIENDS HOUSE! LOL.

        • KCMikeG

          Good one Micah!!

          • Tom Sparks

I’ll even admit, Micah, with all the flames I throw your way, that was an awesome retort to njjohn!
At least Chiefs Fans can take it, as well, as dish it out. A sense of humor goes a long way when it is among fellow Chief Fanatics. I have to do more than flame idiotic Faider fans to vent, after a season like last year!!!!!
And, BTW, Sarcasim will get you somewhere, as your really not such a bad guy, Micah!

          • Michael Shaw

Not a bad guy, just a bad sense of who our QB should be!!! LOL!! Just kidding again Micah!!

        • njjohn

Actually, it’s kind of creepy. My MOMMA is dead, so have fun.

          • micah stephenson

If I had a mature aduience id say “yea I killed that pussy” but sinse we PG13 ima say “Just in case thats true ima change it to GIRLFRIENDS HOUSE.

    • KCMikeG

This may have been too much for him. I hope he has a strong heart!

  • http://www.facebook.com/ron10gotti Ron Gotti

    Geno Geno Geno !!!!

  • Stacy D. Smith

I wonder if we’ll see a pre-draft trade? By this time last year, the rights for Griffin belonged to the Redskins.

    • berttheclock

Actually, the deal was on the 22nd of March. That is when the popular ditty began of “Springtime for DC and the ‘skins, winter for the Cowboys and ‘fins”.

      • Stacy D. Smith

I’m pretty sure that trade happened on March 9th, 2012.

        • berttheclock

Fox Sports reported it on the 22nd as being official.

  • Joe Myers

this would be he cherry on top of a really great cake called the Kansas city chiefs !!!!! :) .

  • micah stephenson

IDK if they seriously want GENO SMITH at this point. But they must do everything they can to drive up the trade cost.

  • Jordan Donahue

I would take him and develop him a la Rodgers for 2-3 years. If Alex Smith fades after a few years then you have Geno ready to go. Or in a pinch if he gets hurt at anytime. He’s the real deal and will be an outstanding QB. Try and keep Albert long term and sign a RT and draft one at some point.

    • Kurt Rauch

I am hopeful, and I think it is realistic possibility–maybe even a liklihood–that Alex Smith is going to be good around here for a long time!

      • micah stephenson

I hope so sinse it looks like we stuck with him.

      • http://www.facebook.com/erika.motley.3 Erika Groth

What do you consider a long time?

        • Kurt Rauch

With any luck, eight or nine years.

          • Justin R Groth

            Then probably not man.

    • micah stephenson

I like that ideal but this is wat I wud do different. Instead of 2 or 3 years, Id have GENO SMITH ready to play after 2 or 3 GAMES. Id draft a couple of OTs in the 3rd-7th rd to back up Albert and Stephenson.

      • Danny W

I wish this would have been the original plan. I hope it doesn’t cost Reid and Company their jobs because that will mean more below average play out of KC.

    • superman_25_58

Geno Smith will be ready to play in his first season most likely, which is why I see Geno as an unlikely pick for the Chiefs. However I do see them drafting EJ Manuels (if they can trade down and pick up a 2nd) and sitting him behind Alex Smith bc it might take him 2-3 years before he is ready IMO.

      • Jordan Donahue

No I agree he’s ready right away, I’m just saying if they have him fine tune things for 2-3 years and maybe spot start late in the year depending on their record. Once A.Smith hits 31/32 yrs old who knows what his production will be.

        • superman_25_58

Ya it sure would be sweet though for sure!

  • Chris Tarrants

I think it could be a real possibility, what if Alex goes down who would you rather have come in Geno or Chase? Nothing against Chase I think he is a good guy but I would much rather have Geno step in. It might all be dejavu in Alex’s ryes if it does happen but if Pioli taught us anything it’s to not put all of your eggs in one basket

    • KCMikeG

I was just asking the same question. If Geno is a better QB now and has the higher upside then why wouldn’t we want to draft him? Couldn’t Daniels be Reid’s next Feeley or Kolb project??

  • KCPauly

Patrick, You took the words right out of my mouth

  • JediChris816

Draft Geno. Simple. Alex Smith is not Elite. Geno’s floor begins where Alex Smith’s ceiling ends.

    • Danny W

      I definitely agree.

    • njjohn

      How do you know?

  • Logan Grace

I believe the Chiefs will pass on Geno but this could be all apart of the plan…. I know that Geno is going to be a Franchise QB someday and I can see everybody looking back 5 years from now and saying why in the hell did we pass up Geno…. It’s how it goes if your a Chiefs fan, hopefully Dorsey/Reid are saving their biggest move for last and surprising everyone by drafting Geno Smith #1

    • micah stephenson

YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAA! Dont play with my emotions like that! Best comment all day! GO CHIEEEEEFS!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/tcoen1 Tony Coen

They want teams to think they are! Smart move not unexpected! How else are they going to trade out of that spot!!!

  • Lyle Graversen

The Chiefs will NOT draft Geno Smith. Period. I’d love nothing more than if they took him at #1 overall and let him compete, but it is not happening. Ever. Let it go people. Time to move on. They just want to add to the hype so they can trade the pick. Somebody get Buddy Nix on the phone.

    • Danny W

I agree if we still had Winston I would have said maybe but we have a giant hole on our line right now. I’d say the games have begun to get the extra picks.

    • micah stephenson

Well lets drive up the hype and the cost to trade with us!

      • Calchiefsfan

That’s what I’m talking about! GENO! GENO!

    • KCMikeG

Hey Buddy, I hear the Cards are going to give the Chiefs their 1st & 2nd this year & next. Buddy ” well then I better give them that and my 1st & 2nd in 2015 cuz we ain’t got no QB’s worth a shit around here” Nice work Andy!
Is Chase Daniels a better prospect than Geno? Could he be the QBOTF? If not why wouldn’t we draft Geno?

  • ArrowFan

Rope a dope or it could be that Geno is worth the pick and sit routine. I would love the pick and sit. But a huge trade involving lots of picks wouldn’t bother me at this point either. If we don’t trade then we must pick Geno.

  • PunjabiPete

I literally only clicked on this article to see what Micah had to say :)

    • micah stephenson

WOW! Im kinda leaning towards wanting the Chiefs to draft Luke Joke-OL. U can never have enough depth and competition at the OT spot. SIIIIIIIKE! GENO SMITH! GENO SMITH! GENO SMITH!

      • KCMikeG

First thought in my mind – Man I bet Micah is going crazzzzzzy!

        • Tom Sparks

          DITTO, Michael!

        • Michael Shaw

Going? Your are implying sir that he wasn’t ALREADY crazy!!!! LOL!

          • micah stephenson

            Lol. Lmao. Yall crazy! Lol

  • mcdoll

MCDOLL the thing about all these first round choices is, i wonder if they would be great for other teams and not for the chiefs , why, i don’t know? so a free agent or rookie, conundrum, i am being convinced a 1st rd qb is a good thing, though and of course getting the extra round choices is good but not if you lose out and none of them are that good.

  • Danny W

First puff of smoke. I hope there’s more going on than what he’s leaked out thus far though behind the scenes.

  • njjohn

CHIEFS ARE NOT DRAFTING GENO SMITH!!!! Wow. Too much information flowing in this day and age. No shit he wants other teams to “think” they might, but it’s so transparent they’re probably laughing their asses off.

    • KCMikeG

No one is laughing their asses off as there are 5-6 teams picking in the top 10 picks that are in bad to terrible shape at QB and the interest is building. They may “think” we aren’t serious about picking Geno but they know there are plenty of others who may not think it is a laughing matter.

  • Calchiefsfan

Sounds like Andy is looking for some trading partners.

If anyone wants to get a kick google “Alex Smith 2005 scouting report”. Remember, he was slotted to go #1 by many of the draft gurus that year. Smith was higher rated than Geno is in this years draft. Just sayin.

  • Da Menace

So stoked for next season! I propose the NFL move FA to feb and draft to March and play two Spring games kinda like college football. Then we could have football damn near all year!

  • http://twitter.com/biglump007 Leon Ritz

I’ll be glad when this draft is over and we don’t take Geno. Maybe then all you Geno lovers will give it a rest. The Chiefs are not drafting Geno this is nothing more than publicity to drive up the interest and ultimately the price of trading into the number 1 pick. It’s not just Geno the Chiefs are talking about its 8-10 guys per the report. The reason it’s 8-10 guys is because Dorsey and Reid want teams to think they could take any of the top players, hence BPA approach. This is all just to drum up trade business.

    • KCMikeG

Maybe not. We have been surprised a number of times already by Dorsey & Reid. I do guarantee that if Geno goes to another team and becomes a great QB that leads his team to playoff wins then we will be hearing about missing that pick for longer (like an eternity from Micah) than we have had to listen to the top DL picks that failed. I believe you are right about the 8-10 players is to keep the options open for potential trade partners.

  • redchiefs

Andy Reid knows how this works, the NFL that is. Geno Smith is a pretty darn good talent, and there is a possibility of him becoming very special. Now if Alexi Smith is still his guy and Chase Daniels is still his best possible #2 then there is a real decision to make here. Not only do you have to decide if you want him, but if there is no one other willing to trade up, then I don’t think you can leave him there for the Raiders to ponder. The Bills or someone better trade up or The Chiefs better take him. I for sure don’t want Geno Smith haunting the Chiefs twice a year.

  • Da Menace

I enjoy that on the NFL page on ESPN that there’s a pic oAlex Smith in power rankings I love our chances!

  • Michael Shaw

If I had been the reporter my next question would have been, “So, Andy, if you draft Geno Smith which of the other FOUR QB’s do you plan to let go?????

    • micah stephenson

Cut Stanzi and “Tricked Ya” Shot Tanney. G.Smith A.Smith and Chase and we are set at QB. Finally
