Chiefs Sign Sean Smith

Literally minutes after we posted an article that the Kansas City Chiefs were still going after former Miami Dolphins CB Sean Smith, Smith’s agent tweeted that his client just signed a deal with KC!

This is a tremendous signing and really helps the Chiefs heading into the 2013 season.

Smith could step in as the starter opposite Brandon Flowers. Smith, who is huge for a CB at 6’3″, 215 lbs., had two interceptions last year while playing over a thousand snaps for the Dolphins. He also allowed receptions on only 54.9% of his 113 targets. He also defended eight passes.

On the bad side, Smith seemed to struggle a bit late in the 2012 season, according to his Pro Football Focus grades. He was also credited for giving up six TDs. He graded a -3.1 on the season. His coverage grade was average at +0.7.

The good news is that Smith is still young. He will turn 26 in July.

We will have more on Smith later but right now, what is your initial reaction?

UPDATE: No official contract details yet but we got this from Pro Football Talk:

Revis would have been my first choice

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Osborn/603992320 Steve Osborn

No way. Revis has too many ??? Knee? Age? Contract extension? He’s talking about wanting 15 mil/year. If we were able to sign him long term, he would screw up the salary cap for years to come.

      • Michael Shaw

        Agreed Steve!

  • http://twitter.com/EdMaldo1 Don Quijote

Bring on the Donkeys receivers. Move Robinson to FS.

    • Stacy D. Smith

      Yep.

    • Steve Blank

      how about moving arenas instead?

      • Michael Shaw

I like that idea, but I am not sure they will. I am thinking they might do that with Dunta Robinson???

  • DieHard_ChiefsFan

Awesome !! Now we just need in ILB and we are solid on D baby !!

  • chiefridgy

    Hell to the ya!

  • micah stephenson

    Finally!!! Hell yea!!! Go CHIEFS!!!!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/genemyuk Gene Yuknis

sorry about geno pal, life goes on……..

    • dominicscarlatti

Yes, too bad we are doomed with Alex Smith at QB, even if we wind up with a top-3 defense. In fact, we may as well mail in this season before it even begins, as there is, according to The Book of Micah, no chance with yet another “retread” QB…

  • [email protected]

This definitely puts the cherry on top of the FA cake.

  • Richard Comstock

its about time! we saw this coming!!!! now we can focus on trading our pick and landing a second rounder to fill our last two needs RT/ILB!!

    • Steve Blank

that would be the greatest offseason in my memory…ESPECIALLY if we can trade back TWICE….and end up in the middle of the first with two extra picks somewhere in the 2nd/3rd

      • redchiefs

With the Cardinals, Bills, and possibly Oakland wanting Geno Smith, I think trading out of #1 is a real possibility

        • Darkwolf1414

I doubt they would allow Oakland to trade up being that they are a divisional opponent. I hope the Bills want Geno bad enough to trade up. I DO NOT want him going to Oakland.

          • Justin R Groth

He ment the cars and bills could be trade partners for us because the haters want geno.

          • Darkwolf1414

We’re going to need to carry 3 QBs this year. Considering Alex Smith’s injury history, we have to go into the season with a 3rd QB. I wonder who that will be?

          • Justin R Groth

I agree and have wondered also

  • steve james

No more fa move imminent my a**!

  • Priest4Prez

Yeahhh!!! Suck it Denver!! Best signing (on paper) thus far! I’m excited, now I have to order a Sean Smith AND a Leon Sandcastle jersey! Whoo!!

  • GDL40

    A L L R I G H T ! ! ! ! ! ….. now we’re talking ! I just wonder how much he’s getting ?? getting exciting !

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steve-Osborn/603992320 Steve Osborn

I’m having a hard time believing it’s 5 mil per like the last tweet says. If so, Dorsey may be spending time behind bars.

      • GDL40

There it is ….. LOL. somehow I missed that last one

  • Justin R Groth

So we are replacing Winston with #1 pick or do you think Ried ans Dorsey like Stephenson enough to have him start?

    • Troy Utt

Say hello to our new OL… Just a matter of whether it’s Joeckel, or Fisher seems to be the favorite of the talking heads… There is just no way they can possibly see Stephenson as anything other than a back-up unless he spends the next year in the weight room. Although he showed glimpes last year, lacking upper body strength defenders turned & pushed him right into the play!

      • Danny W

Yeah I have to agree unless they make a trade your looking at Joekel or Fischer.

        • Troy Utt

As much as I would like to agree… I just don’t know how it (a trade) would be possible, as they have to be sitting on top of just enough to cover the rookie wage scale! Then again… They have pulled off the last couple of FA signings leaving me thinking the same thing! Neither the draft nor season can get here quick enough!

          • Danny W

I agree. I think they can hold some teams hostage by saying were gonna draft Geno unless you trade up and come and get him. Buffalo is extremely desperate to find a QB.

          • Troy Utt

How true that is! I was just commenting yesterday about Thigpen’s contract with Buffalo… he had signed a 3yr/$9m deal! Not sure he is even still in league? I have been pleased with the offseason, & believe we now have a plan! Dorsey & Reid executed pretty well thru that as I don’t believe anyone had any idea what they were doing??? Just as we are discussing, the #1 pick… there is no way to nail them down!

  • Doug McD

I think with WWelker in Denver our offer price went up. You can’t coach size or youth and he has it both. Let’s hope he can keep his head on straight and be open minded to learn from the coaches.

Just what we needed not a big name but a big body.

  • 58dtrip

We will compete in this division and there’s no way pioli wold have made these moves it’s time for the draft and some good coaching.

    • Danny W

That’s the truth, Pioli would have waited for the scrap heap and then thrown together some old has-been no namer with a one year deal.

      • chiefridgy

To add to his “Right 53″

        • Danny W

          Substance over sizzle.

          • chiefridgy

I don’t know about you but I’m ready for some fing sizzle!

  • Stacy D. Smith

This team is getting better in a HURRY! That’s another excellent addition to this defense. We have only ILB left to address on that side of the ball. More help with the passrush would be ideal, but we can add those parts in the second wave of free agency or in the draft.

WOW! I’m blown away by the offseason this front office has had.

    • Doug McD

Can we keep up this pace? Kinda worried about cap space. Is there another player cut coming?

      • Stacy D. Smith

I wouldn’t expect any more marquee signings.

I think when Reid told the media it was time to focus on the draft, he had already factored the Smith signing into the equation. I’ve heard that before Albert’s franchise tag, we’re sitting around $15.5m. With the tag applied, we’d be looking at $6m free.

I’m curious now about what Smith got.

        • Stacy D. Smith

3 years, $18m. Not bad at all.

        • toperspective

was that number before the Jackson restructure. Adds – Albert, Alex Smith, Devito, Robinson, Sean Smith, Fasano. Deducts – Jackson restructure, Dorsey, Cassel. And the answer is?

          • Stacy D. Smith

The unofficial calculation was done late yesterday before Cassel was cut. I’ve heard that cutting Cassel saved $5.5m in cap space. So let’s say $21m available (15.5 + 5.5). Factoring in Albert and S. Smith’s deals (I’d guess about $13.5m). My rough estimate of available cap space would be something like $6-7m.

          • toperspective

Great. Thanks. So does that mean they have 2-3M left for all of the draft picks? Of course some of the guys currently on the roster will be gone soon – freeing up a bit of additional cap.

    • dominicscarlatti

Stacy, anyone in particular you like for ILB, maybe with that 1st pick in the 3rd round?

      • Stacy D. Smith

Te’o, Ogletree, Bostic… I really hope they trade back and recover that R2 pick. An ILB in the Top 64 would be awesome.

        • dominicscarlatti

A trade back in the first round would be fantastic, but I’m not sure it can happen given the configuration of talent at the top of this draft. There are some fascinating players that should be available late in the first or early in the second. Maybe Ogletree or Te’o in that range, plus I like Margus Hunt, and a bunch of WR’s. Maybe even a QB there…if available, Bostic would be a great pick with the first in the 3rd round, but I doubt he’ll still be around then.

          • Stacy D. Smith

I think Geno’s made his case to be the top pick in the draft. We know there are probably 3-4 teams in the Top 10 who need QB help. Especially now that Buffalo has released Fitzpatrick. I honestly think we have a better shot now at trading down than we did a week ago.

  • oldchiefsfan

OH DAMN!!!!!! Excuse me while I do a jig!!!

  • Steve Blank

heck yeah…we needed this to counter the welker move by denver..now we can put a bonafide starter on the slot wr…..very very nice

  • oldchiefsfan

This is the one I have been wanting. This was the Free Agent I wanted most!!!! I am freakin PSYCHED!!!!!

  • freshmeat62

On to the draft. Last time I felt this good about signing a FA was when they got Chester McGlockton. Yikes!

    • Michael Shaw

What about the Willie Roaf move???

    • Danny W

I was pretty stoked about Ty Law. What a flame out that was.

  • mg2098

He’s the best CB we could have signed, and Im sure his career is about to skyrocket here in KC. He is a good CB that has elite potential. I hope he reaches that status here in KC. Love the signing!

    • Danny W

Is it the consensus that he’s the best? Even over Namdi and DRC?

      • Michael Shaw

Sorry to be a buzz kill but NO! He isn’t better than Nhamdi. He might be on even par with DRC. I think Nhamdi would have broke our bank and Reid doesn’t have fond memories of him based on using him the wrong way!!

        • Danny W

Yeah I wouldn’t have thought Namdi would want to play for Reid again.

      • chiefridgy

        Of course not silly rabbit

    • berttheclock

Just before FAcy began, his agent floated an $8 Mill multi demand. Funny about how much reality sets in on Day 3 of FAcy.

  • ArrowFan

This is going to be a very competitive camp this year, something Pioli always talked about but was rarely able to deliver. Thanks Dorsey and Reid. Now lets load up on some draft talent as well. Also if they can somehow pull off a Cassel trade to anyone for anything then they get an A++++ in my book so far.

    • Richard Comstock

cassel has been cut so thats not gonna happen

      • ArrowFan

just read soo now I say they only get an A+

    • Michael Shaw

Nobody would have ponied up a draft pick knowing we had to drop him for salary cap considerations.

    • Darkwolf1414

Pioli’s idea of competition was to bring in any scab that he knew couldn’t beat out Cassel. His ego was too big to admit that he made a mistake.

  • Irebigjohn

Stoked on that shit, chiefs defense is going to be the best it has been in years. Now we need a ILB and we will be the best in the NFL.

    • ladner morse

A really good ILB…. and I’ll back you up on that.

      • berttheclock

Agreed, because to win the division, you will have to beat Denver and PM. In order to beat PM, he must be pressured and not just try to stop him with DBs.

    • dominicscarlatti

Bert, as a fellow old-timer, will appreciate this – in our last (and only) Super Bowl winning season, the Chiefs “D” allowed the fewest total running yards, fewest total passing yards, and fewest total aggregate yards. Of course, we also had that “retread” QB we picked up from the Steelers after they waived him.

  • Jim Harper

Man has Santa been good to us or what! This is just amazing. Where are all the people that complained Clark Hunt was cheap now? Only a couple spots left to fill and the draft is still coming. Great news!

    • berttheclock

That socalled “cheapness” was a myth. Look at how much Dorsey has had to cut to get the cap within reason. The problem was not with being cheap; it had to do with the fact Pioli was terrible in evaluating talent.

      • chiefridgy

        Scotty boy was a dipshit.

  • toperspective

Great signing. Now who is the resident capoligist? Where do the Chiefs stand now with all of the coming and goings and the Jackson restructure.

    • http://www.facebook.com/tyler.eckstein.31 Tyler Eckstein

Think about 5-6 mill left. That will go to draft. We are done in FA

  • berttheclock

One of the best parts of this is the Raiders really wanted him.

    • dominicscarlatti

Another is that this will help us when we face Peyton and Co.

  • ladner morse

I take back everything I said that was negative about Dorsey and Reid not drafting Geno Smith……. the Chiefs have set themselves up for the best draft flexibility ever.

On a scale of 1-10 this signing rates an OMG.

It’s gooooood to be a Chiefs fan!

  • http://www.facebook.com/genemyuk Gene Yuknis

wow!!! great job in the front office!!!

  • Danny W

Help me out Addicts, I don’t know that much about this guy other than he was pretty sought after. According to Paddy’s article he wasn’t graded out that high. Is this guy really better than Namdi or DRC? Thanks for anything.

    • http://www.facebook.com/tyler.eckstein.31 Tyler Eckstein

Not as high risk I would say. Namdi and DRC really struggled in Philly Smith is coming off of a solid year and plus he is young. Personally I’d rather have Smith than Namdi or DRC but all 3 are solid corners.

      • Danny W

        Thanks for the comment.

    • berttheclock

BTW, did you read the comments by DRC about signing with Denver. He said when he walked into his meeting with them, the coaches pointed out some of his flaws and told him they could improve him. He said he was so impressed, he signed.

      • Danny W

I didn’t know DRC signed with the Donks, thanks for the let know bert.

  • Michael Shaw

I was afraid they would sign this guy. I don’t think he is as good as Nhamdi would have been. Say what you will about his stay in Philly, but he was put into a system that was completely opposite of his skill set. That being said the only reason I really didn’t want this guy to be signed was because I wanted Dee Milliner. He will be better than Sean Smith is now and, of course, a lot cheaper. Now it appears we are destined to take Joeckel or Fisher! If we didn’t get Milliner I was hoping we would drop down a few spots and pick up Chance Warmack. He will remind everyone of how good Will Shields was!!!! So welcome to the Chiefs Sean. I am hoping you are as good as every team chasing you thought you were!!! Do good kid and pick Manning’s pocket all day on Sunday when you play him!!!!

    • Darkwolf1414

I told you that the experts said the same thing about Milliner as they said about Geno. The best at his position but not a top 10 talent overall. I am not excited about taking a Tackle with our first ever 1st overall pick. They are now saying similar things about Joeckel. He’s not the consensus top player at his position. Frustrating as hell! As I’ve said before, if no one is worth a #1 pick then why doesn’t the NFL skip the draft this year?! It’s absurd!

    • http://www.facebook.com/jon.gonzales.351 Jon Gonzales

Dam all these negative fans all the dam time, nothing they do is good enough!!! Have some faith in your team!!!

  • KCtitleist11

this has been an amazing off season
